I'm not familiar with all those numbers, but in the Navy, I was an aviation electronics technician.. (AT) Stationed in JAX, VW-4, Hurricane hunter.. WC-121 Super Connies.....

I don't recognize the new MOS numbers. In the late 1950's mine was 112 heavy weapons. ALL were basically 111, rifleman.

63Hotel tracked vehicle repairman. I also worked as a 63Foxtrot, recovery specialist(tow truck driver)lol, while I was staioned at Ft. Benning.

Its been so long ago they don't use the MOS designation any longer. Wire communications/radio operator for a FA unit. I never was a 13B but maybe a 25C using todays numbers and then later a 13Z and finally 00Z (Sgt. Major) until I destroyed both knees. Served 9 yrs, 18 days.

Well, they have entirely different AFSC's these days. Back when it was A57170. The "A" prefix indicated that you were qualifed to work out of the Huskies. The rest was pretty simple. First three digits indicate specialty, in this case firefighter. The last three were your "skill" level. 03=apprentice, 05=specialist, 07=supervisor, 09=danged if I can remember. Basically you you have to obtain a minimum or 05. Then when you reach E-5 you have to qualify as 07. At E-7 you do the 09 thing. But like I say, the prefixes are all differnt today, but they did keep the skill level ratings the same.

96 Charlie from 84 to 88, then they changed the designation to 97 Echo, IIRC, for the rest of my enlistment (got out in 93).

I served in the IPW section of an M.I. Company. Found out last year (Did a google search ) that my old unit was deactivated about 8 years ago.

SFRanger, pretty impressive on the 18Z5! I am currently a 19Z5R8. Used to have a P but not anymore. Big Bore and Morgan, I work with 19Ks all the time and have been in the Cav for over 24 years. You 19Ks sure don't like to walk much, but when the Sh*# hits the fan, I sure am glad you and your M1a1s are on my side! Meeteetse, did I read that right? You made SGM in only 9 years? that is amazing! I have never heard of anyone making that so fast! RSY, I have MOSQ'd on TOWs and Dragons for a lot of years what with the Bradleys and such. Big Bore, Wow, you must be really old! I came in in 1985 and all the scouts were 19Ds. The 11Ds were already reclassified. You are a real OG Scout!

I had 4, my primary was small arms repair, secondary`s were turret artillery repair, field artillery repair and fire control instruments repair. In my 3 years in the Army I spent much time in various schools.

Another USAF vet here. I'm MOS illiterate, but speak AFSC

Started out as a 431X1E (aircraft maintenance specialist, jet over two engines, (x is where the skill levels goes, ya start out as a 3, advance to a 5, then 7...), worked phased inspections on B-52 G and H models, as well as occasional night shifts "catching" returning AC (oil em, make safe, put em to bed), and the rare instances helping the munitions guys load bombs (strong back, weak mind, do as yer told and don't touch any wiring).

Then a midnight mishap (fell out of #1 wheel well, busted up both knees) got me cross-trained to Mantenance Analysis, transportation (basically crunching numbers, reporting same, for every wheeled vehicle on the base. Ended up teaching the entire Transportation Squadron about this new thing we were about to get, a CRT terminal, direct input computer terminal (instead of IBM punch card input). Oddly, I left before we ever actually got the system. I always used the B3500 mainframe with card input.

I got busted up pretty good in a helicopter accident and I do feel old. I think they chenged from 11 series to 19 somewhere around 1978. I only OJTed as a scout in 5/77 AR. Walking from a M60 tank with just a 1911 is not comforting in broad daylight.

11E - Loader, Gunner on M60A1 in Germany during 1967/68 with 1st of the 3rd ACR and worked also was our Company Armorer when our regular armorer got a sole surviving son discharge after his brother was killed in Viet Nam. Tank Commander on M48A3 in Viet Nam 1968/69 with the 25th Infantry Div.

I was in for only seven years and when I walked away was up for E8!! Some of us I guess are just seen as being more military types so they gave us rank and responsibilities hoping we would stay. I don't think you could do that now as times have changed.

Let's see Noah. I was in mortars iwht the NJ National Guard then transferred to the IA NG and was in land lines, drove an APC, drove a jeep for a colonel and was a radioman. The IA HQ company had no mortars. Just barely learning to type now.

Mostly we would go to summer camp and lay about 300 miles of land lines then wait for the tanks to tear it up and then go find the break and fix it and at the end go pick up the 300 miles of wire again.

Air Force 3100 - 1952-1955 - general medical officer.

That restricted me to being deputy commander to a 35 bed hospital, chief of pharmacy, chief of X-Ray, chief of OB-GYN (we delivered about 30 per month and I did about half of them), base preventive officer (VD - and all communicable diseases - diagnosis and treatment, inspected mess halls, meat and milk & eggs supplies) and, last but not least, base radiation safety officer (in charge of plans in case of a nuclear attack) - that was really "general practice" before I specialized in surgery.

Forgot th mention we also got to be MOD (Medical Officer of the Day - over night duty with work the day before and after) depending on how many medical officers we had at any particular time.

OJ, were the enlisted men in the Air Force like some that we had in the Army? We had one guy in Korea who got VD so many times he was busted 3 pay grades and restricted to post, and when we went to the field, he paid a local to bring him a woman later that night during his guard shift. He got Gonorrhea again. The Medics and the Battalion Physician were wanting to make him wait 3 to 4 weeks before treatment just to teach him a lesson. The Post Commander told them that they couldn't do that. I was told by a Medic buddy that the Post Commander then grumbled something about having to follow regs even when dealing with the dumbest Tow Missile Gunner he had ever seen.

We had some active ones but not that active. I had spent my internship at the county hospital for Detroit (Wayne County) and the other guys interned at "genteeler" hospitals and none of them had ever seen syphilis in any stage - I had treated all three stages. One day a guy came to sick call with a strange red rash and all the other guys had seen and touched his red elevated spots but couldn't come to a diagnosis. They called me for consultation and I immediately advised them it was second stage syphilis and them skin lesions were contagious - even to just touch. You never saw such hand washing - imagine trying to explain to a spouse that was how you caught syphilis -

Interning at such hospital required being in the upper third of your class in med school and hours were long - our small wards had 30 beds - the others had 60 beds - enough to keep an intern busy. I ended up taking my surgery residency there also after getting out after Korea and will always be grateful for the training provided me there.
