Anybody here have favorite loads for the 30/30win using Hornady 30cal 85gr JSP's with Unique powder? TIA

What?!

I just want a low velocity plinking load. The load that I was given last year using 27gr IMR 3031 does work, but the primers are backing out a bit, hence the query for Unique loads.

Primers backing out? Photos? Could be a couple of reasons for that.

Off the top of my head I remember those bullets measure .312 !!
Could be wrong.

.308 SP bullet for the .30 Luger that works. The original load was an FMJ. We couldn't find those at the time we were fooling with the load (provided by John Kort). If it is backing out primers something isn't right.

try 4-8 grains of Unique or Red Dot, Been using that since '73 with 113gr Lee FP for a squirrel load and general plinking/shooting.

Primers backing out would indicate there isn't enough pressure to set the case back against the bolt face. Similar effect of shooting wax bullets in a revolver without enlarging primer flash holes. Like three legged turtle mentions go with quicker powder and it should be okay. Unique is a good powder for this as well, don't know charge weight, sorry.

27 gr. of IMR 3031 doesn't give me that problem, whatever is happening in his rifle.

Near as I can figure, 27gr IMR3031 is too lite a load for an 85gr bullet. Heck, the case doesn't even expand, how's that for lite. I was going to try 30gr 3031, but figured Unique would be a better powder for a lite plinking load.

BTW, Win factory ammo doesn't have the primer packing out in my Win 94.

Thanks, 3leggedturtle. The RCBS cast bullet manual has a load of 9.0-11.0gr Unique for their 30-115-SP bullet. I think I'll try a starting load of 7.0gr for 5rds (one round at a time) and see what happens.

Agree 100%, even though it has nothing to do with what I posted about. I remember a one panel cartoon that shows what looks like a stuffed swat member mounted on the wall with the shooter telling a guest that he didn't know what it was, but he found it lerking out behind the house and shot it with his 30/30.

but my point was that in fact the police in this country do wear masks -- as in Swat Teams and others in some circumstances so, let's be careful who we're shootin.
