Just spent a week up in rural Ohio visiting my in-laws. Y2K, my nephew and I ended up shooting every day, and my daughter joined us for one of the range sessions to boot. Lots of fun. Made me realize though that I need to make a range/gun cart. Something like the fellas use who participate in CAS. A cart to put everything into, lug it out to where we are shooting, and then have it to safely hold everything while we are blasting at targets. It does not need to be for CAS shooting. I does need to be something I can break down somewhat so it will fit in the back of the Suburban.
So, before I start researching ideas on the web, I thought I'd tap into everyone's expertise here. Has anyone made a range or gun cart? If so, what do you like about it, what would you change, and what would you recommend for sources for parts and plans? Pictures are most welcome. This will be a project for Y2K and YK's Little Girl as well.
I built one for bpcr shooting out of plywood,it'll hold 4 rifles, has a box for junk, and I built the handle so it can be used as a cradle to clean the rifles with. Also fixed an arrangement so you can use one of those big lawn umbrella's on the side. Works slick but is a pain in the tush to haul around.
The Shooters carts that alot of folks are using now are really handy to transport and use at the range, but at 260$ all tricked out they may be out of budget.(glad I won mine a couple years ago )
You can adapt a baby stroller, just by adding gun racks for the handle bars of a 4 wheeler to the strollers side bars.
You can also build a gun rack onto those cheap cheap golf carts sold at Walmart, target and Kmart.
I agree with Don McDowell, look around some pawn shops and such. Look for the little two wheeled golf bag carriers. There are a variety and some are well built. A little imagination could turn one into a gun toten cart. Nice thing is they roll easy, fold up small. Just have to figure what you want to carry (number of long guns and accessories). Might be able to remake one and usually a little haggling can get one on the cheap. Just an idea.....Good Luck...
These are the factory made carts . I've seen the new 4 gun models and they are really nice for a family.
Saw a couple of used, the old style 2 guns, for sale at the Quigley for 50$ or so. http://www.ruggedgear.com/index.cfm/pag ... cat112.htm
I saw a pretty neat one a guy had at our range not long ago! He used an 2 wheel old golf cart he bought at the Goodwill as a basis, and then built a neat little box that had drawers below, and notches for the guns above, with bungies to hold the guns in place. Nice part was the wheels folding away kept it thinner and allowed it to lay flat on it's side and not roll around when he put it into his Surburban.
The three-wheel ones look too 'tippy' for some terrain.
We use one like this - the wheels are 26" I think if that helps show size.
We simply lay guns (we've had 20 long guns in it along with a dozen or so handguns) down on an old wool blanket, then fold the blanket over them for the next 'layer' if there are lots of guns. We put range bags etc. at the end away from the handle, and handguns usually in them. Works really well, and we use the wagon for all sorts of other garden duties.
They DO make FOLDING ones in the same configuration (haven't found link yet)...
We thought about making some sort of notched-wood apparatus to set down inside the cart to cradle the guns individually, but haven't found it necessary.
We got ours from a relative but here's one place selling them. Not cheap, but very light weight, stable, and useful.
Here is my cart that I use for high power shooting. The shelves on the front are hinged and fold up. I bought the aluminum and my brother in law welded it together for me. My only complaint or future modification would be bigger wheels, the spoked type seen on other carts. The small wheels don't work well in the field. John
Hey there Ysabel Kid - Here is one I designed and built. I'd be happy to get you some details if you'd be interested in building one for yourself. I could prolly get one out in kit form and it would make shipping somewhat less painful. Best regards. Wind
