OT have a decision to make

Post by barbarossa »

Trying to decide between two rifles.I can only buy one and both are close to the same price and each one fills a particular interest of mine.First one is a custom made Baker rifle made from Rifleshoppee parts in unfired condition. The second one is a vintage german prewar mauser
sporting rifle in 8mm .Here are the pics of both

The flinter seems unique......Do you need a shooter, or is this a whim/wallhanger?

I personally would be looking at the Baker, espacally if it was left handed for me. Do you know who built the Baker, and is that a Chamber's Siler lock? Of course I don't know if a Siler lock is correct, but I do know the Chamber's Siler lock is a very good lock.

These guns are so different, ony you can decide in the end. However, there are a lot of mausers out there, a Baker might be harder to find at a good price. Which one would you get the most enjoyment out of owning and or use the most. Which one fills the biggest hole left in your arsenal.

And last but not least do you really like the Baker, or is this Baker, just a Flintlock which resembles one of several models that would make you happy. Same for the Mauser. Is it the Mauser for you, or just one in a sea of Mausers that might trip your trigger?

I would be using it as a shooter not a wall hanger. The lock on the Baker is from the Rifleshoppe and it is cast off of an original lock in fact all parts are cast off of an original
Baker part. This is a top of the line Baker not one of the poor India made copies. As for the mauser I am intrigued by its lines it would make a very nice hunting rifle.

I’m sorry that I can’t offer you a “real” answer.. But when I’m confronted with such a choice – I always ask myself, which rifle will be more likely for me to find at an affordable price in the future?

Using that question has paved the road for many of the guns that I’ve bought and the philosophy has served me well. Good luck on whichever you choose!

You will have to pick the one that trips your trigger haardeser and faster.

All I can say for sure is that if it were my pocket money was burning a hole in, I'd take the rocklock home. There are way too many Mausers around to get all het up about one more.

If that baker is assembled by the rifleshop it will retail for about $1600. That's roughly 4 sporterized Mauser's. If future resale has anything to do with your decision the baker would be the way to go.

I would go for the Mauser - but that is only based on my interests.

If you had a couple hours free and wanted to shoot something, which one would you grab outta the safe first? I've got a few pistols and when I wanna shoot something, I usually tend to go to the funnest! Turns out to be my Ruger Super Blackhawk, .44 Mag w/med. to light loads. So, which one, Flinter or Mauser, would be funnest to shoot?

BTW; I believe you can hunt with both!

Many of my gun purchases over the years have been tainted with the "which is likelier to be outlawed first" factor, and of course that could be either one of these since neither looks 'bad' to the television crowd. The Mauser is a "military" gun, but so was the flintlock, just longer ago. The Flintlock uses a "high explosive" powder which has ALREADY been almost outlawed and likely soon will be, but smokeless won't be far behind.

If I didn't already have a "citizen utility rifle" as in AR-15 or Mini-14 or Garand or M1A or AK-semi or something along those lines, I'd get the bolt gun.

Otherwise, I'd get the one I wanted to take to the range and SHOOT...!

While I love the flintlock, I probably wouldn't use it.

I lust after a mauser like that.

I was out shooting my RifleShoppe Baker today and can attest to the quality of their product. The lock is fast and the barrel is real good quality. For me it would be an easy choice because I collect single-shot military rifles. Trouble is, once you get the Baker out of its case at the range everyone wants a shot with "Colonel Sharpes' rifle".

I think it would be no contest, Baker for me.
