Marlin Marauder .30-30

Post by 1886 »

I found this recently. It is a Marauder made in 1964 ser# Y3xxx. They were supposedly made for two years, 1963-1964. Barrel reads 336 RC .30-30 plus the other stuff found on Marlin barrels of the time. Barrels should not read Marauder. Evidently there are fakes out there. Discontinued because of poor sales? They were offered in .30-30 and .35 Rem with the .30-30 being the more numerous. Total production was about 5,600 units. I bought it because I had not seen one before. I took her out today for a cast bullet session. Shoots well despite crude sites. Carries really well but it is not as light as one might think. Big thanks to marlinman. He helped me verify it's authenticity and gave me a brief history lesson. If anyone cares to weigh in please do so. 1886.

I wish there was an emoticon for droll. Outstanding find there 1886. That one is a highly sought after little filly and I wish she was sitting in my stable right now.

Always wanted one of the .35rem Marauders.

To me, that would be the "perfect" lever-gun.

I guess I could always trim my .356 down a few inches...

I believe that the Maruader is Marlin's answer to Winchester's Trapper.

Straight stock 336 with a 16.25" barrel.

Yes, it is a 16 1/4" barrel, and straight stock, only made with prefix letters of W, (1963) X or Y (1964) If it doesn't have one of these prefix letters it's a fake that's had the barrel and stock swapped.
(I have a like new barrel and tube in my parts!)
Very nice looking gun 1886!

Very nice looking and pre-safety. Cant go wrong with that.

I am learning more from marlinman or I did not listen too closely the first time, I stand corrected the Marauder was made from 64 to 65. Any technical questions about the rifle should be directed to marlinman. He is the man in the know. Thanks. 1886

I remember when the Marauders were advertised. Didn't have the money or the time to enjoy one then. Nice catch!

Nope, don't pay any attention to me or I'll lead you astray! I edited my post above, as the 63-64 date you gave was right. I had a brain fade!-Vall

Nice! And the forearm doesn't even have the extra half a cord of wood the current marlins have!

My dad caught me mail ordering one from Herters catalog (IIRC) and nixed the deal. It was all the Christmas and birthday money plus weeding, etc. that I could scrape together. Made me put it in the bank!

However, my 1982 Texan has a barrel which splits the difference between the 16 and 20 inch and is pretty good. No, there isn't much weight saved.

AK Church cut down two 336s with good results.

I have owned Marauders in 30-30 and 35. They are neat little guns and very rare. I sold both during hard times and still regret it. Truth be told though, my 20" barreled Texan balances and carries better than the Marauders did anyway.
