Re: Have you guys tried this? .44 Bullets from 40 S&W Cases
It looks like the .40 S&W case is only .424" at the base, so how does it engage the rifling...?
Still, in days like these when the guv wants to ban everything, it wouldn't hurt to have options for reloading.
Plus . . . I could use them in my .444 Marlin Thumper...!![Twisted Evil ](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)

I measured a fired case, the body measured .430

Ah-Ha - good point -a FIRED case is a bit bigger than the factory specs for unfired (duhhh...).salvo wrote:I measured a fired case, the body measured .430
That would be the kind we'd be using!

I also noticed that fired .45 ACP measures right at .475 perfect for my freedom Arms. Hate to waste .45 brass though.

Hmmmm....I may have to try that in my 470NE. What if you had a nose pour mold and put an empty case inside the mold, then filled the whole thing. You'd end up with something like the old Speer half jackets. You'd have to cut the mold to fit the modified empty case of course.

I'm having a hard time with the idea of throwing away good brass, too. There was a time when .40 S&W was everywhere, but the brass vultures who sell it for scrap picked it all up.

Re: Have you guys tried this? .44 Bullets from 40 S&W Cases
I had to go out to the shop and try to make a prototype/dummy bullet out of a 45 acp case for my 470NE. I trimmed .120" off the mouth, cut off the rim and had a nice jacket. If a guy had a mold cut that would hold the brass, I think you could drill out the flash hole larger to allow filling with molten lead. I do think you may run into venting problems though. Would probably have to be a nose pour mold.
As well as my gas check bullets shoot, I don't know why I'm bothering. Just kind of bored today I suppose.

Hmmm... this is interesting. I am glad I picked up a lot of .40 S&W brass even before I had a gun that could fire the round. I agree though, I'd be hard pressed to ruin perfectly good brass doing this. Still, if push comes to shove, it is nice to have the option.

Re: Have you guys tried this? .44 Bullets from 40 S&W Cases
The 45 ACP case works just fine in the 475 Linebaugh (and would work in the 480 Ruger also) ... I have shot lots of them. I tried them from velocities of 700 fps to up around 2000 fps from a 7 1/2" barrel Freedom Arms. (edit - in my 5 1/2" 475 Linebaugh I typically ran them 1700 - 1800 fps)
![Image](http://www.leverguns.com/web/45_475_1.jpg)
![Image](http://www.leverguns.com/web/45_475_2.jpg)
They have to be loaded into the cartridge BASE-First .. otherwise the primer blows out and leaves the projectile stuck in the bore. Trust me on this one.
Accuracy is decent... the above were shot at the steel chickens on the NRA Range at Whittington -- and they took the chickens down. The velocity on this load was 1800 fps.
I know of people getting 2100 fps from 7 1/2" revolvers but I never pushed any quite that far.

I think it would be hilarious to do - especially for carry ammo.
Can you imagine what the MSM/CSI would do with a recovered bullet that actually looked like a cartoon bullet (i.e. flying cartridge, rim & all...)???
It would blow their fuzzy little minds.
Anyway, see the Swaging Sub at Cast Boolits.

I can see it now, the coroner says, "He was shot with a .45 ACP."
"Are you sure?"

This is a great idea! Thanks for posting!
Anybody with reloading and casting equipment can make their own jacketed bullets.
I don't own a 40S&W but I don have several 44's! And as mentioned, there's scads of 40's laying around at the range.... ditto on 9mm - for 10mm.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: Have you guys tried this? .44 Bullets from 40 S&W Cases
I have some bullets for the old 41 Colt. They are a heel type bullet and are a bit smaller in diameter than a regular .40 bullet. They fit in a 40 S&W just fine when pushed all the way down, but with a bit of air space between the bottom of the bullet and the base of the .40 case. A small bit of lead is still exposed and if I could figure out how to roll over the mouth I think it would work. Any thoughts.? ![Idea ](./images/smilies/icon_idea.gif)
