44 Mag Primers in 1894 SS

Post by HORACE »

Sorry havn't posted for a while, unfortunately other things have intervened.

However, I recently purchased a 1894 SS in 44M, and I'm having heaps of fun with this rifle! :D

When I go to the range now, I experience feelings of guilt because I am seem to be neglecting my 45/70 1895 and my Win 94 30/30.

My question however is whether it is OK to use Rifle primers in the 44 as an alternative to Pistol primers when I reload; some components are hard to come by here.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Horace.

Not a real good idea. The rifle primers are taller than pistol primers and may stand proud enough that a magazine detonation is far more likely; not likely, mind you, just MORE likely. If this is a long term scenario, you can purchase a primer pocket uniforming tool (for rifle primers) that will make the pockets deep enough for what is available. I have not tested it but I doubt there would be a problem going back to pistol primers at a later date unless you already have a shallow firing pin strike. Good luck.

I have. Try one in one of your cases to see if the slight "extra" height presents a problem. There is no other reason not to.

I've been using ONLY CCIs, and I clean the pockets out pretty good. I see no difference in them.

Hey, who's close to their "stuff" someone Mic both of them and let us know.....I'm not close to my stuff right now......

Thanks for providing the info though, Rufus. :D

Thanks for your unput everybody.

I'll carefully do some experimenting and single load until I'm confident.
