What is your favorite wild Hog hunting lever? Backup?

Post by rangerider7 »

I have been carrying an old 1886 Winchester 1/2 mag in 33 Winchester. I always carry a large caliber revolver as back-up.

Normally I carry my Guide gun but I also take my 71 sometimes. Soon I'll be taking my new 86 TD :D . For a sidearm I usually carry my FA in 475 Linebaugh, but I sold it to Salvo to fund the purchase of the 86 TD form OI. Now I have to settle on just carrying my ole S&W 25-5.

I mostly use my Remington 870 pump shotgun with Remington Copper Solids but when I do use a lever gun it is usually my Marlin .444S .

I don't use a backup.

I have 2 favorites for Hawgs, A C.Sharps business rifle in .45-70 loaded with 405 grain FP lead over BP or a Marlin .41 Magnum with 210 gr. JSP's over IMR 4227. Either one smacks 'em like a sledgehammer.
I back them up with either a Black hawk in .41 mag. or my old Colt SAA .357.

Pokey;
Those are Bishop stocks on the 92; fore stock is a beavertail with finger tip grooves. It was a custom conversion to .357 and has a Douglas barrel. Here is how it looks now after being refreshed last year.

Some mechanical work was done and the wood finish was stripped, the scratches, dents, and chips repaired and an hand rubbed oil finish applied.
It looks much better and shoots like it did when I bought it 30+ years ago.

Trapper 44mag and Super Blackhawk are my hog hunting lever and back up.

Hopefully I'll be able to get a hog with the Ruger some time soon.

Now don't you guys feel silly?

I like to use a Marlin 336ER in .356Win, and my backup is a Winchester Model 94AE in .356Win.

Model 94 30-30 with .45 Colt Ruger b-u. Have a Guide Gun, but haven't used it yet, other than sighting it in at the range--- if i ever get time to go hunting again, it will get its turn, but the 30-30 is sufficient for most Oklahoma/Texas sized piggies

El Chivo, If Bill Williamson is doing that out in the open and not while they are pinned up in a trap, "mucho hombre". I had one of my fellow hunters get his leg ripped from ankle to knee by a large hog. If I don't happen to have the right gun with me and see a big hog, I always make sure there is a large tree near that this old man can get up in, before I shoot. I have only had a couple of hogs run at me after being hit with smaller handgun calibers but that was enough to be careful with big hogs. I don't remember how many stitches it took to close up that wound but it was a mess. He is fine now but has a war story for new hog hunters that come around and gives them a peak of the scar just to let them know the dangers.

I've never had the oppurtunity to hunt hogs. Don't have any I'm aware of in Washington State or any other place I was long enough to go hunting. I think I'd use my '40 Win '94 in 30-30 and either my Colt SAA in 45 Colt or my FA 83 in 454 Casull.

I can't remember the guys name but that was a guy who works for GAMO Air Guns and was making a promotional video for the new (at the time) GAMO Whisper and GAMO's (new at the time) Steel RAPTOR pellet. The guy was in a tree about 4-feet above the pig and he shot the pig in the top of the head between (close to) the eyes. Yep the pig did die. Many people among the Air Gun community condemed the guy for what he did as a .17 caliber airgun IS NOT enough in almost all situations for a pig. GAMO took a lot of heat for releasing the video. I don't know about now but that video used to be on the GAMO web site.

kimwcook, I'm sure Texas would let you come down here and pick up a few that have been trapped and take them back to the state of Washington and turn them loose! Then maybe NOT! Hogs are a pest to ranchers and farmers here in Texas. Most all of us have enough pork in our freezers to last out the recession and then some. That's a nice "94" and Colt SAA. Those saddlebags and spurs add a nice touch also. A man of my heart. :D

Nice thing about Hawgs in Arkansas,There's so many of them and they are so destructive that there is no season here so You can hunt them any time of the year, so anybody here that don't have a freezer full of pork all the time just ain't trying.

Yes, sort of like a shotgun. :)

The flat bottomed forearm also sits very steady on a benchrest - handy when developing handloads.

Great pic! That Winchester would certainly work for Hawg medicine and that is a beautiful Colt You have. I've got a soft spot for SAA's anyway and those grips really set the blue off. :)

maybe Jim was relating that video, but I had the impression it was someone he knew.

Personally I've given up on hog hunting because they're so mean. I was talking to a stranger about hunting and he related a story of a macho friend of his in Northern CA who went hog hunting alone with a bow. He shot his hog and the arrow went through, and the hog came after him. While the hog was on him he took an arrow from his quiver and stabbed the hog several times.

The guy was in the hospital for weeks and nearly died from infection. The hog ate one of his fingers.

I usually have to hunt alone so it's deer for me. Might get trampled but not much chance of that.

It has a lever on the top fella's , favourite pig medicine left barrel with a load of SG's and backup which is seldom needed another load of SG's from the right barrel . I bowhunt with a selfbow as well with only whats between my ears to back me up , been charged a few times , bitten by a cranky sow when I grabbed one of her suckers and knocked down once but never ripped - so much for brains . I have not hunted with my Rossi .357 yet

The only thing I have shot a hog with is a Guide Gun using 405 grain jacketed soft points. Couldn't see the need for a backup. I do want to try my Puma in .480 Ruger and use my SRH in .480 Ruger as a backup. Even with the .480 Ruger, it would have to be a big hog to need backup. BrianSH used a .45 LC handgun and didn't need backup on a pretty decent sized hog down in Hondo.
