Question about shortening an 1894
Anybody know the difference in length between a Trapper fore end and a carbine fore end if any ? I like my "new" 1894 , but would like it better at Trapper length and my 'smith can do the cut, crown, re-set the front sight, etc. for a light price, but i didnt want to throw the thing symetrically off balance too much

Thank God! I was afraid you were about to ruin a Winchester! You can't do anything to a Marlin but improve it, IMO! Just get out a hacksaw and a hoof rasp.

Re: Quest about shortening an 1894
My 1894 is the 20" cowboy so its short enough already but I just got through shortening a 39A.
I know its not the same rifle but I guess the answer would be the same.
In my case I had the barrel and mag shortened to 18" and left the wood alone.
So far a whole bunch of people have said how much they like it and only one has said he doesn't.
I like it. It looks good, feels good and works well.

Streetstar,
I'm not a Marlin X-spurt so I'll make this comparison. The forearm on my Win 94 Trappers are the same length, as far as I can tell, as the forearm on my Win 94 carbines.
Were I to do what you are thinking of doing, I'd just leave the forearm as it is.
Margrnt,
Welcome to the forum.

I just had a 24" 1894 CB-L cut to 16 1/4". No change to the forearm. Everybody says it looks great.
Here it is next to the 24"er

Re: Question about shortening an 1894
yep, that looks cool -- and seals the deal for me -- the rifle is wrapped in a soft cloth in the backseat of my truck as i write this. As soon as i get off work, it is being dropped off for its transformation. My rifle is micro grooved and has some nicks and dings in the furniture, so i am not anticipating it having any "collector value" , but it will sure be a neat little pickup gunadirondakjack wrote:I just had a 24" 1894 CB-L cut to 16 1/4". My .44 came that way.
Love the 16" barrel. As soon as I get my hands on another 336 / 35 Rem it's
gonna get "Trappered"

The SBH started out as a three screw w/ 7 1/2" barrel and no finish when I picked it up at a show. Didn't care for the long barrel so I sent it off to Hamilton Bowen/ Bowen Classic Arms for an action job, case hardening, new sights and had the barrel shortened to 4 5/8".
Photos don't do it justice.
It's become my all time favorite sixgun.
My fav. load is a 240 gr LSWC and 10 Gr. Unique. (94P likes this load too).

That's at 25 yds and 4 shots into 1 1/4". pulled that last one.

Re: Question about shortening an 1894
Some day, off in the future, someone is going to ask whatever became of all those 20" barreled leverguns, and where did all those 16" leverguns come from?? The factory records sure don't show it!

Doug,
That was off my range bag as a rest (with my glasses on).
I don't shoot that well off hand.

Re: Question about shortening an 1894
Good morning
I cut off a 1892 44-40 SRC Winny made in 1893 some 6 years ago here in Peru. It already had been drilled on TOP of the receiver for a local built scope mount.. so no real loss.
The origonal muzzle was cleaning rod wollered out so a 45 ACP bullet would enter. Shot 6" patterns at 20 yards. Removed 2" of barrel replaced front sight and it now will shoot as good as ever with a .432 220 grain and 8-9 grains Unique.
Mike in Peru God Bless ya´ll

It is a 'smith in Central Oklahoma. I don't know very many businessmen who aren't willing to do more work, but he did state he was a little bit backed up. I have a sneaking suspicion mine may get bumped to the head of the class from the look in the man's eye and the fact that he pulled out his own '94 project to show me (going the other way, installing a 24" octagonal barrel.)
PM me if you are in the area, but you might hold off to see what mine actually looks like first when it gets done

I actually didn't even ask the price --- i have taken a few things to him and our understanding has always been to not sweat calling unless its over $200.
The last chop job he did was take 4" off a Rem 700 .243 and re-crown -- that was $40. This will be a little more involved due to the mag tube and re-setting the front sight, but i can't see it going over $100 - but i'll know soon enough
