OT- Gots me some WW

Post by Andrew »

I won a couple Flea-bay auctions today that netted me 100lbs of WW for my casting adventures. I gave up on local sources so I went to E-bone and happend across some decent buys. I also ordered today the Lee 452-255-RF two cavity mold from Midway so I can start woking on a good hunting hold for this fall's deer season. Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but I am sure happy. :D :D

That's cool.

I just got a .454 mold for my '94. Hoping to star casting my own soon too.
All I need now is a furnace.

I was getting a tire relaced yesterday and asked the guy what he did with the old WWs.
The good ones he re-used and if not he recycled. It was worth a shot. I've been picking up
lead for years and probably have a 100 lbs or so. We'll see how far that goes.

The sad part is that if there's 7,000 grains in a pound, 100 pounds is 700,000 grains, so if you didn't lose any lead, you'd only get 2,000 350 grain bullets from 100 pounds...! To non-shooters that sounds like a huge amount, but then to non-golfers it seems strange to have more than a half-dozen golf balls.

That is so true. Once you start casting, 100 pounds won't last long. I've got near 1000 lbs. squirreled away and I still scrounge all I can get my hands on. I'm lucky to have a pretty good source, and I've never paid a cent for any of my wheel weights, so far.

Andrew, I remember the first bullets I cast. They were .36 cal round balls for an Italian copy of the Colt navy I bought from Dixie Gun Works ( engraved, silver plated and glorious and came to me for the grand cost of $39.95 with the mold included) !
You will be hooked for life, just like me!! :D

Hope that lead is close enough to go pick up! The shipping will kill any deal you got if it isn't!

Well, I don't know what you guys get it for but I paid $1.09/lb shipped. Midway want's $3.37/lb+shipping for 20-1. I don't plan on sending much more lead out into the dirt/shubs/bushes to never be seen again. I plan on getting a trap built to recycle my lead and keep the good times going longer. I figure even at a loss of 25% to splatter/misses/dross, that's about......hmmm, let's see.....

104lb x 7000 = 728,000gr (full load)
728,000 x .95 = 691,600gr (SWAG of actual smelt)
691,600gr / 255gr = 2712 blts (255gr LRFN's)

2712 first,
2034 second,
1525 third,
1144 ect,
858
600
450
337
253
189
142
106
-------
10,350 castable rounds

That's just a shade above $.01 per bullet over the long haul excluding lube/electricity. Not bad.

Oh, I like to plan this stuff out if you haven't figure that out yet.
