What is effect of cut stock and drilled receiver on a pre-64

Post by RANisbet »

I have been offered a Model 71 Winchester, a Deluxe with low serial number that still looks extremely good (95 to 98%).
The gun had an inch cut off the butt stock and a red rubber pad installed. (Butt plate now missing). Also had the receiver drilled and a scope mount and scope added. (Lyman peep sight now missing).
From looking at some of the 71s that have recently been sold and are available right now, realistic values for one that's still original is between $1600 and $2200. (There are some with prices that are way over those. I think those prices are more a wish than real.)
Can someone offer an estimate of how much the modifications reduced the value of the rifle.
Thanks,
Bob

Is this a long tang? I assume so since you said low serial number. Pictures would help. There are some scope and mount combinations that may not detract as much as others.

Unaltered 71s in the condition you are talking about will sell in the $2,500+/-200 range for a short tang, and the $3500+/- 500 range for a long tang bolt peep. Recent economic conditions have reduced values slightly and slowed sales, but these numbers generally still hold true.

I would put yours in the $1,500+/- range with either ONE of the alterations, but with both, I'd say $1000 to $1,250.

If the LOP is correct for you, and you will be hunting/shooting with the rifle, the cut butt and pad may suit your needs. Also, if you like the scope and appreciated extending the practical range a bit, that could be a good thing. But a strictly collectors standpoint, the rifle isn't worth much. At $1,250 or so you'd still have a heck of a nice hunting package for that price.

We'll see what others think.

If you're looking to buy the rifle for an investment, pass on it as the value has been reduced by the modifications. If you're looking for a shooter and the rifle is in good shape, buy it and shoot it.

Thanks Chad,
I had not seen anything in the various forums address the effect of multiple modifications to an older weapon, in particular ones that tend to have both active current users and current collector followings.
Your valuation of a rifle with the multiple mods as I described, $1000 to $1250 seems realistic.
