Any old shot gun shooters here?
Can you tell me what Winchester ball powder 540 MS
and Hodgdon's Top Mark can be used for?

540 MS was used with 1¼oz field loads. Per Lyman's 1st Ed. Complete Shotshell Handbook...
The slowest burning of all the Winchester shotshell ball powders, this powder is particularly adapted for use with the heavier shot charges. It is excellent powder for magnum shotshell loads. Our use included 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge. Normally packaged in 1 lb. and 3 lb. kegs.
copyright 1969, Top Mark isn't mentioned. I don't remember using or seeing it used.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Winchester W540MS is just a tick faster than HS-6 Hodgdon with AL-7 Alcan on the other side according to my burn rate chart. Winchester W540 is a tick slower than HS-6. I should think it would work well in 45acp, 38, 45colt, 9mm and similar applications. I don't have any data for it in any application.

I can't find any reference to Top Mark.

I did find some reloading data for W540 on Steve's pages but W540MS is a little different.
