Hey, scrub out the bore add a little bluing and it'd be a shooter.
I actually did an examination of a Colt SAA that had fallen into an outhouse. It was found about 50 years later. The grips were perfect!

If you could get it for the $40.00 it would make a neat wall hanger. I like the way it was done up.

Hmmm....a little wood, and some red felt, and you've got an expensive collectable! I've got two 1881's and an 1893 carbine that are all found relics. One 1881 came from the area around Wounded Knee, the other two guns both came from places around Oregon. Maybe I better get busy building displays for these wonderful "collectables"! :D

I occasionally see thses relics as display items in restaurants that have an old west theme. Kind of neat...buy a relic and claim it on your taxes as a business deduction!!

About 35 yrs ago I dug a circa 1902 .45 out of an outhouse in Rawhide, NV. It was in newspapers, still loaded, and actually functioned right out of the pit. It needed a little work, but I traded it for a '73 .38 WCF SRC. :D

Sometimes, ya gotta look past the gun in question and maybe hone in on a certain part of the gun. A few years ago I found a sporterized Model of 1917 Enfield in a gun store. It was pretty rough and the price tag on it was $95.00. I snapped it up. Why? Because it had one of the old, old Redfield Palma receiver sights on it and that particular model of it was worth about $350.00. I put a newer Redfield receiver sight that I had on hand on the Enfield and sold the Redfield Palma receiver sight for $300.00 to a guy at our range.

There was supposedly a 73 and a 76 found not to long ago in my town in an old barn being renovated. They were supposedly both wrapped in some sort of oil paper and quite well preserved. Crazy how things show up. 1886.

A local family here owned a junk yard around here, about 25 years ago they filed a theft report on some guns that were stolen. Last month they sold the junk yard and in the trunk of one of the cars were all the stolen guns along with a note from the grand dad about how he was hiding them from a grandson! The problem is that the trunk leaked and all the guns including a mint 1891 Marlin 22 were ruined. I ended up buying the whole lot for $20. Then I took the note to the grandson who never failed to tell me how I could never catch his gun thief. You never know.

Story & Entertainment
By Sixgun

Millions of years ago, there was molten rock that merged with iron. Then a man named Andrew Carnegie popularized iron by adding carbon into it and called this strange metal "steel". Another bright man named John Browning made this steel into a metal object called a "1886 rifle". A company named "Winchester" stamped "45-90" on it's barrel. This rifle enjoyed many happy years in the Canadian wilderness and harvested many moose, wolves, deer, and a few black bear. (for real) Then........................70+ years later a 20 year old dope named Sixgun buys it and shoots the living heck out of it with this "new fangled" smokeless powder. 30 years and close to 2000 rounds later, it goes BBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM :o (end of story)

Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK guys. The oldtimers here remember when that happened. This WAS a very nice 1886 made in 1903 that I purchased in 1974 for $400. I harvested a few deer and other things with it over the years. I logged 1,841 rounds out of this rifle with most of it being warm. It has a blackpowder barrel--not nickel steel.

Then................the big day came when I was actually going to go on my first elk hunt in Colorado. I was working up "medium warm" loads pushing a 325 gr. bullet 1800 fps in anticipation of the hunt. After several hundred rounds spread out over a 3 week (or so) period, it went BBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! :) :(

I really thought I had died when this bright white flash appeared in my face. Chunks of steel and wood were imbeded in my right elbow area. (I am left handed and I was shooting from the bench with my right arm directly underneath the chamber area)

I bandaged my arm up with some napkins and spent the rest of the day shooting other guns. Other guys at the club told me to go to the hospital. I said NO!!! as the hospital will be required to call the police as some how the cops will twist the story around and cite me for "negligence" and I would loose my carry permit.

A call to the powder company and inspections by a few guys who know what they are talking about said it was metal fatigue and the old girl had enough. I have it still and is hung in my gunroom as a constant reminder to be easy on the old guns. I call it the "School of Hard Knocks"---------Sixgun

Image,
notice the case still in the chamber? :o

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/blowups.htm

This is the link to one of JimT's articles titled "Blowups" in the articles page of the home page. In it, down to towards the bottom is a section detailing Sixgun's KABOOM. Even a pic of his bloody chewed up elbow. There are other good KABOOM stories there as well.

Every time I look at Sixgun's blowup photos I cringe. Thankfully, my '86s wear NS barrels that won't allow such an accident. :(

No. I should have explained myself. In most states, if you do something stupid or careless with a firearm, they will revoke your concealed carry permit (handguns for self defense) as the "people in charge" don't want careless idiots toten loaded guns around in public.---------Sixgun
