OT The Mayflower... a voyage to war

Post by gamekeeper »

I have just finished reading a book called "MAYFLOWER... A VOYAGE TO WAR" by Nathaniel Philbrick. published by Harper Perennial.
It is described by the "Observer" as a "brilliantly constructed...an enthralling, scholarly book."
I found it a fascinating and bloody account of life in New England.
King Philips War was a real series of exploits that would make incredible movies of "quote the cover" VIOLENCE, SUBTERFUGE AND EPIC DRAMA.

I was wondering if many of you guys are interested in the history of the Pilgrims as the author suggests that a rather quaint version of the Mayflower story is usually told in schools.

Anyway I can recommend the book as a good read.

I reside approx 15 miles from "Smith's Castle" - once a trading post and now a historical site/attraction - and 20 from the Great Swamp battle site, which is in a corner of a large state Game Management area.

As you posted - quite different from the pap generally spouted.

Yet another perspective can be glimpsed if one tours the Pequot Museum at/near the Foxwoods Casino, on the Pequot reservation in Far Eastern Connecticut - complete with fort and battle models, etc.

According to the book, in 2002 there were estimated 35 million descendants of the Mayflower in the USA. Roughly 10% of the population :o

Now THAT'S funny!! However, prolific procreation was probably some kind of unwritten requirement.

Some of my ancestors were watching the Mayflower come in, but didn't hang around afterwards. See how our enlightened open border immigration policy turned out!

I may have to look that book up. Always looking for the next read. My ancestral connection to the Mayflower was Dr. Samuel Fuller.

The fecundity of the Puritains must have been in part due to the bundle beds. King Philips War was the first major American Indian vs Settler conflict. The first generation of Mayflower settlers had pretty good relations with the local tribes but in time that changed. As settlers moved westward conflict ensued. The whole thing was started off over a cow believe it or not.
