I wish these things would happen to me but it seems that my buddy has this huge funnel in the sky that catches all of these neat guns in the Pennsylvania area so no one else can have 'em. (well, I do get lucky once in a while)
They have this sign out front that says "We Buy Guns" and low and behold, some guy walked in a little bit ago with this first generation Colt SAA, made in 1928. I was called to check it out and upon examination, I concluded it was a rare one indeed. A call to the factory verified this as a letter is on its way.
The barrel is marked "38 Colt" but the chambers were cut longer to the dimensions of a 38 S&W Special. No reaming was evident. It is chambered for the "38 Colt Special" which is identical to the 38 S&W Special but the factory load used a flat tip bullet instead of a round nose which is standard on the S&W Spl. Colt used .38 Colt marked barrels as the dimensions are only a few thousandths off and plus, they most likely did not want to spend the money for a new die marked "Special" when only a handful of these guns were made, plus Colt & Smith & Wesson hated to put their competitors names on their guns.
The Colt still has 90% of blue and about 30-40% case colors. Hard to tell from my messy pics. Mint bore with 100% mechanics. 82 of these were factory chambered in the SAA.
A box of sealed factory ammo from my collection is included with the pics of the Colt. Notice the flat point.
