Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
I don't know if this has been done on here before, but I thought it might be fun. Name your four rifles, (must be all levers) for hunting North America.
I have to go right now, but I will get back with my choices, later. Can you do it? Frankly, I am going to find it tough to choose. I am glad I don't really have to, but for the fun of it, what it?

All levers...
A Marlin 39a "Mountie" in .22
A Winchester 94 in .30-30
A Winchester 95 in .30-06
A Browning 1886 in .45-70
That should cover about everything on the continent!

I just reckon that my four would be 1. Winchester 1892 32wcf 24" round barrel. 2. Rossi '92 SRC .357 20" barrel. 3. Rossi '92 .45 Colt 20" barrel. 4. Winchester 1894 1950 30-30 20" barrel Marble's Tang sight. With different bullets and loads that should do for what ever I would run across. (Plus my old Colt SAA.45)

For a little SPICE, how bout if they had to be all the same manufacturer,
Marlin 39a,
Marlin 1894 in .32-20,
Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag, and
Marlin 336 in .444 Marlin
or all DIFFERENT manufacturers...?
Ruger 96/22 in .22 LR
Marlin 1894 in .357 Mag
Puma 92 in .454 Casull
Winchester .405 Win

I would go with the following (half way there):
1. Marlin 39, 1927 (Pre-A), 22LR.
2. Marlin 1893, TD, 1908, 30-30.
3. Vintage Marlin 45-70.
4. Vintage Marlin 35-375 caliber, undecided as yet.

I know a guy that has:
Marlin 39a
Marlin 336a (Old model) .30-30
Marlin 336A DL .32 Special
Winchester 1886 .33WCF
Marlin 1894CL 32-20
Uberti 1873 riflle 44-40
All used for silhouette.
He is a lucky guy. Mine all fell overboard in deep water during a recent unfortunate canoeing accident.

.22LR
Win 94 25-35
Model 88 .308
Marlin 45-70
OK, OK - a Marlin 357. Instead of a 22 because a 22 pistol will do or maybe I'll just have 5 or 15.

Re: Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
I could go 2 steps better and say my 2 guns for all north america hunting:
.22lr Marlin 39 tds and .457/45-70 WWG Marlin 1895. I would add the NKJ .357 to make it three and a 30-30 to bridge the gap to bring it to four. Locally, I would be happy with the .22lr and the .357 as my only rifles. I like having the WWG for trips for bigger animals than these deer here in PA. I didn't take my 30-30 into the woods this season. I'm still hunting with just the .357 and .22lr.

Well its not exactly the 4 gun battery I would like but
1963 Marlin 39a Mountie
Winchester 255 .22 mag
1987 Marlin 336 30-30
Browning BLR Lightwieght in .308
That outta take care of anything I need here in the south east part of the US, were I to need something bigger then I would want a Marlin guide gun in 45-70.

Re: Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
My every day rifles would be the following with the caveat that I almost have the calibers figured out but the final platform is still a work in progress.
Small Game & Varmints: Winchester 94/22M or a Browning 53 in 32-20
General Utility "go to rifle": Browning 92 .357 or a Marlin 1894 .357
Antlered Game hunting: Marlin 336A 30-30 or a Winchester 94 30-30
Big Game: Marlin 1895 45-70 or a Browning SRC 45-70
Heck, I've already run my battery up to eight rifles.....I just cannot work within these limitations.....

Today's choices are:
NKJ 16" EMF .357 beadblasted stainless, receiver sight & gold bead, good wood
NKJ 16" EMF .44 blued octagon, receiver sight & gold bead, with good wood
26" Win M94 30-30AI, deep blue, great walnut, receiver sighted with gold bead
20" Win M94BB .356 Win, Leupold scout scope with receiver backup and gold bead, great walnut, medium big loop lever
Put Williams FPs on the Winchesters, and I think some old Lymans on the M92s.
If a brass bead works better on rifles, then OK.
Tomorrow I want to look for some of those other Winchester Levers that you guys have.

Deluxe 1939 Winchester 64 25-35
Marlin Cowboy II .44 mag
Deluxe 1936 Winchester 71
Marlin Cowboy 38-55
I like to load my 25-35 down to 22 LR velocities with cast bullets. That is one reason I didn't have a 22 LR in my list. Plus, I don't own a .22 LR rifle.......... Loaded up to a more maximum load I can and have taken deer to 200 yards.
My 44 Cowboy is my everyday gun. It sits by the door loaded with 12 rounds of cast loaded up at about 1200fps and is basically the do-all farm gun. I've also taken deer and elk with it.
The 348 takes deer to 200 yards, elk to 250 yards. She'll shoot a 3 1/2 group at 200 yards with jacketed or cast.
I shoot cast only in the 38-55 and is mostly my elk gun. A 280gr cast @ 1700-1800fps seem to do very well on elk for me over the past couple years! I imagine I could stretch it out to 150-175 yards, on deer especially, but on a small elk .............oh heck who am I kidding? On a big bull too!
It was TOUGH to leave a 45-70 off the list. Anymore my ol' High Grade '86 seems to spend a lot of time as a safe queen. I shoot her pretty good during the summer killing innocent rocks whenever necessary, but haven't had her out hunting for quite a while. More and more it seems that the 38-55 gets the nod when decisions are being made to make meat.
I'm starting now to think seriously about a Marlin CB in 45-70

In our neck of the woods, shot’s much beyond 50 or so yards just don’t
happen very often. (terrain & woods density)
So in all reality, I could be fat and happy with just my new to me

Even though this applies to use in the USA I automatically include Introducted Trophies to North America as potential targets:
I don't care what brand .22RF - small game and plinking
Savage 99 in .308 - medium game up to 400 lbs
W1886 45-70 or M1895 (457WW cal.) - short range stopping and excessively tough game up to 2000 lbs at close range
BLR - 300WM - coastal bears, moose, elk, large and extra large exotics by varying bullet weight, and long range shooting

same as Doc
.22 and 45/70 cover it all
and of course 1897 (?) 12ga with several barrels
add .357 trapper if I must
but the .357 really is redundant

Re: Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
Well, I have been trying to decide and after thinking about it, I had to narrow it down some. There are two guns that I seem to rely on the most, so I recond I have to include those.
Winchester 94/22mag with a Williams receiver sight.
Browning Steel Framed BLR pre-folding hammer in .308 Win.
That only leaves me two more to choose from. Since my favorite traditional leveraction, bar none, is the Pre-64 Winchester Model 94 in 30/30, with the origional semi-buckhorn sights, It would be very difficult to not include it.
Pre-64 Winchester model 94
That leaves only one to pick out of several models and calibers, that I really like a lot. I could probably take everthing with the .308 Win, but I hate to give up all of the medium or big bores. And I would hate to give up the pistol caliber levers, or my little BL22. I am sure glad I don't really have to make this choice.
In the end, I think I would just go with my .348 Winchester model 71.

OK, three BLRS in .308, and a Marlin 1894C in .357 mag. That is what I have right now, and anything in the southern tier of the lower 48 would be in danger of dying if shot by .357 or .308, assuming the right bullet construction.
Four different rifles, I presume, was the question, so, to "play," strike two .308 BLRs, and add a Marlin 39/39A or such, and add a bigger bore. Based on nothing more than reading, I would probably go with either a .358 BLR, or Marlin in 45-70.
Of course, I wouldn't really subtract any of my BLRs, and I have a Marlin 1894CB .357 on lay-awake that I plan to pay out soon, plus a take-down BLR is calling my name, so I won't be a 4-rifle guy anytime soon.

if, you allow a shotgun, the 1887 win 12 gauge, 18"barrel. covers the world game animals, at close. range. pretty good self defense weapon also.

I've got to say I don't have a lever 22. I need to remedy that someday.
I'd take: Win. '94 in 30-30
Win. '86 in 45-90
Marlin 1894CB in 45 Colt
Win. '94 in 38-55

Re: Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
Easy, & these shooters are in my Armoury Vault:
Marlin Cowboy 45 Colt
Marlin levers in .35 Rem, .41 Mag., & .45-2.1" (AKA .45-70)
Or the Browning 1886 in .45-2.1"
Enjoy them all. But I find the Marlin .45-2.1" more "shootable" for me, despite its barrel sight. The Browning crescent butt gets old @ times, but the Marble's tang sight gives a better sight picture for my "tired eyes".

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Re: Four Gun Rifle Battery, Only Levers need apply, for the U.S.
I guess the only two I'd need would be a 22lr and 44mag.
But I suppose a 30-30 could be useful for them way off shots.

For the past 5 years have used a 39a 22lr and 336 in 30wcf for everything I hunt.

What can the .30-30 do that the .35 Rem can't do...?Modoc ED wrote:.22 LR -- Ruger Model 96/22

I think the .22LR, .35 Rem, and .444 could really handle it all...!

Win 9422 .22LR
Win '94 (Pre'64) .30-30
Win '92 (clone) .45LC
Marlin 1895GS .45-70
That should cover anything from brown squirrel to brown bear nicely.
