Marlin 336 factory sight replacement question

Post by deerwhacker444 »

Over Thanksgiving week I came into possession of a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. that I purchased sight unseen from my cousin. Turns out it is a 1978 Micro-Groove model without the safety in very nice condition. But, somewhere along the line somebody put some really crappy sights on it and they just look terrible, they had to go in the trash. I'd like to replace them with a Marble's semi-buckhorn rear and a Marble's or Williams front sight since I can't shoot peep sights worth a dang. Herein lies the question.

While looking for sights to purchase, I noticed that the manufacturer lists a certain "range", say .350" to .650" for adjustments in height. How do I make sure that I purchase the correct front sight for the given rear sight? Do I just pick the middle, say .500" for the front sight? Is there a formula for getting the right pair of sights? What I don't want is to install them and then be out of adjustment and have to turn around and buy a taller or shorter front sight.

Any ideas?

Since you want to purchase Marbles sights, I'd suggest you call Marbles. They have listings for every rifle they ever made sights for, or many of them anyway.

Or call Marlin and see what height front sight was originally installed on that rifle. Then go to Marbles and check to see how close they come.

Williams has a chart of OEM replacement heights in their catalog. Can't make heads nor tails with their web site though.
For use with their WDOS rear sight they call for a .290"M front sight. That's .290" tall with a medium width base.

So the information is there. Lyman has the same information, as does Marbles like I said above.

Phone calls are the way to go. Get to a person and get the info.

If your Marlin came with a front sight ramp, and not with the front sight dovetailed directly into the barrel, the issue height is .312"-.315" - and that height would be compatible with an issue height rear from whomever.

I usually order replacement fronts in .375" height, unless I'm peeping the rifle, incase which I would go higher, to just over .400".

The .500"-.600" tall sight blades are generally for those rifles that have the front sight dovetailed directly into the barrel, w/o any ramp.

If your front ramp's been marred, Numrich has a replacement:
