This story reminds me of one involving wasted money and sea birds. I don't remember the exact species, but here's a short story. A naturalist noticed female birds hanging out together during the mating season. So he got a federal grant to study lesbian sea birds. Turns out, there just were more female birds than male birds, and the females without mates simply hung around together for company. Yep, your tax dollars at work. Probably took eight or ten years of grant money to figure that one out.
