First WMA/Natl Forest hunt now history

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Well, I just got back and unpacked from the weekend in Angelina NF - Bannister WMA in East Texas with Bonedigger and RKrodle.

Had a great time and enjoyed the whole thing, though I did'nt bring any meat home this trip.

But, I did get to help Bonedigger with his doe that he got on Friday morning before Ricky and I arrived. We did see plenty of deer but for several reasons neither Ricky or me shot one. Me, because I never got more than a glimps of my deer and Ricky because he couldn't make a positive ID on the buck that he saw twice (he thinks it was the same buck probably). It needs to be eigher a spike or 1/2 spike or have a 13" inside spread with 4 or more points to be legal - basket bucks are off limits...

Regardless, I was very impressed with the number of deer in the area and appreciate the scouting reports and help from Bonedigger to get us into some good spots.

We did a local motel this trip but look forward to a camp-out in December for our next trip there - with fires and camp cooking, camp tails and warm sleeping bags. :D

Oh, sorry none of us took any pics this trip! I didn't think about it until after Bonedigger's doe was in the cooler and we were too busy chasing em in the woods the rest of the time to dig out the cameras...

Bonedigger took his doe with his 336 in 35 Rem. I'll let him tell you the details :) Ricky had his .358 BLR and I was using my Win94 30-30AI - accept on the last morning (this morning) and I broke out my Rem700 30-06 in case I saw one real early in low light - the peeps are great but dissapear w/o some ambient light.

Well we can't win them all. Sounds like you had a good time nonetheless.

I got skunked this season too. The county I hunt was included in the point restriction on bucks this year. Sounds similar to yours, except we don't have to measure the spread before shooting them. I never got a clear shot at a legal buck. I may go out with a handgun in the anterless portion of the season in December just to put some meat in the freezer.

It was a great time. Got to meet a new member here, Bonedigger, and like all the rest of the Levergun forum folks I've meet he is a class act. We got some hunting in and alot of ribbing to go around also. But, boy my legs are sore from the walking  . I keep forgetting how out of shape I am, although I still say round is a shape  . It was a pleasure getting to hunt with OSOK again. And I look forward to our December hunt. I hope some more of the leverguns members can make it. I'm planning to go back next week for a day or two, if time, and the wife, allows. Oh OSOK, My wife has already used some of the mixings and they are GOOD. Thanks again to Bonedigger for doing the scouting for us and to OSOK for the companionship. Bonedigger I hope you can make in December.

Yeah, that's makes it tough trying to catch them, measure them, and then shoot them  . I tried to get OSOK and Bonedigger to measure and hold them while I shot but they wouldn't go for it.

Well now that's not fair - I would have cept I just can't run that fast any more. And I don't think Bonedigger can either
