In California, one can no longer buy a single-action .45 Colt of any kind. Ruger, for instance, sells a fine .45 Colt SA in their Super Blackhawk line, but apparently they did not want to hassle with the testing requirements for sales in California; so that particular model is not "approved" for sale here. But if another Californian wants to make a personal sale through an FFL licensed representative to another local, providing that the gun was at one time legal in this state (before the "Gun Safety" restrictions), he can do so.
Can this be done at a gun show? Is it ever done at any of the gun shows? I ask because I am interested in buying an old .45 single-action at a reasonable price, if there are any out there (not the Ruger Redhawk dbl action .45 LC). I'm not looking for a collector piece, just a good ol' American cowboy .45 shooter.

I think you're close to correct. Isn't it still OK and legal to do a face to face sale of a SAA that's antique? (1898 or older)

Yes - antique or not, private party sales of a handgun that did not pass the "drop test" are still legal, providing that the handgun was in legal possession of the seller before the "drop test" standards were enforced (I think in the late 80's). I just don't know if these same private party sales are allowed in gun shows, which are coming under more scrutiny these days.marlinman93 wrote:I think you're close to correct.
