OT: MORE Marlin MR-7 foibles .... and questions

Post by J Miller »

OK, my last thread was a rant about how a certain gunsmith had done things I did not request to my Marlin, and did not do what I did request.

So, like the old saying goes: "If you want something done right, do it yourself."

I took 86er's suggestion and bought one of those XS Weaver mount back up sights.
It fits nice and looks really nice too. Great idea, thanks Joe.

Ok, so the front sight still tilts a bit. I got a plan on how to right it. I'm going to reduce the diameter of the mounting screws just a tiny bit and open up their holes in the sight base. That will allow me to pivot the base a small amount and get it straight up. Got some extra screws too in case I botch them.

I might be able to do this with the rear sight too. But since I'm going to use the XS sight I'll just put some plug screws in the holes and ignore it.

But here's where I ran into a snag, always one of them isn't there. The front sight has to come out in order to remove the screws. I have one of the front sight pusher tools so I thought, no problem, push the sight out, and do the IFMs.
Yeah right! That front sight is in there so tight, my Wheeler front sight pusher tool BENT. ARGGHHHH!!
OK, so the invoice for it is still in my email, and although I bought it two years ago I'm hoping Midway will exchange it for credit for one of the better Williams ones.
Until then I'm stalled again.

OK, now for the questions.
First question:
As I related last time, I now have the original scope mount holes and an extra set of holes in the receiver bridge. The GB (gun butcher) says the factory holes were off center. I say, I have no idea. (Personally I think he moved the scope bases so it would make the iron sights look straight.) Gun was used when I got it, had a scope mounted on it, and I haven't had a chance to shoot the darn thing yet. SO, having only a 100 yard range available to me, just how can I tell if the GB is right, or full of brown smelly stuff? Which ever set of holes I do not use I will fill with plug screws for now.

Second question:
In my stash of goodies I have two plug screws that are about twice as long as the regular ones, and have a tiny little flange on the top to fill in the threads. Does anybody know where I can get some like that? Or what they are called if they have a special name? I'll be calling Midway tomorrow or Monday and will probably order some. That is unless somebody has some they'd sell me. The screws on this are 6x48 I believe.

Third question:
When I ordered the XS rear sight I also ordered one of the threaded apertures so I could use a screw in aperture with a smaller hole. Unfortunately there is not enough room for the screw in aperture. Even the smallest is too large in diameter. Is there a source of smaller ones somewhere?

Q#3: You ARE talking about the outside diameter, eh? If so, will the Williams 3/8" diamter thread into the XS system sight? Marbles smallest that I found at Midway is 1/2" o.d.

As to Q# 1 & 2; you know I'm no good to ya!

Griff,

Yeah, the OD. I don't know about other XS sights, but the little aperture thingy has to be way up to use the Williams apertures. I was just wondering if someone knew of a source of smaller diameter ones.

I don't really have a way to reduce the OD of one.
