Guide Gun - loosened brain or ported barrel flash?

Post by otteray »

I'd fired lots of 1400 or so fps loads and it is all very pleasant.
Today, I fired off my first 350 gr jsp (1800fps+)
Holy cow!
Now, the recoil was tolerable; but the orange flash that blinded me momentarily was a shocker! I thought maybe my brain got jarred loose for a second.
So, I fired off several more for a half inch group at 50 yards. :D
I had to remove the scope and go back to a peep sight, though; the scope just plain wants to move forward.
I can imagine, if a scope is not correctly secured to this shootin' iron, it could do some damage!
I'm going Central California coastal hog hunting again, up-coast from town; and will be bringing this or my Marlin 1894S 41 mag. with a 260 gr cast (1600 fps)
We saw lots of pigs signs last year, but never saw one.
My rancher friend says he has seen several already and again invited me.
Wish me luck, please!

What length barrel, and is it ported? My 'only' .45-70's are the Marlin Cowboy and a ported short Guide Gun, and there is a LOT of difference in recoil!

The 1894S has a 20" microgroove barrel with straight grip; the Guide gun is straight grip 18 1/2". I thought it was a microgroove until I slugged the bore.
Both are pretty darn accurate with cast or jacketed loads, too.

Hmmm........I'm shooting my 405 Loads at about 1700....pretty much plinkers. Not saying they don't kick, but the 26" bbl of the Cowboy tames it down pretty good.

Blaine, thanks 'cause that reminds me; I have some Miwall 405 gr jacketed soft point (1315fps) that shoot pretty mildly out of the Guide gun. I was thinking of using those instead.
Do you guys think that that would serve me just as well as the stout bark and bite 350gr jacketed soft points for hawgs out 100 yards or so??

I am not the voice of experience, but I'd opine that your 405 load would do well against 'bout anything out to 100 yards :P
