What yr. Win 94's switch from steel to plastic butt plates?

Post by DANCESWITHEMPTIES »

Good Evening all. As the title says, can anyone tell me when the Winchester Model 1894 (in 30-30 if it makes a difference) switched from a steel butt plate to a plastic one?

Someone here knows and will come along - probably in the morning. In the meantime, welcome to the fire! :D

I checked the butt plates on the 1972 and it is plastic, don't know how much earlier they started. The old 94,s a 1950 and a 1939 have steel butt plates.

According to R. Renneberg in "Winchester model 94 the first 100 years", the phenolic buttplate replaced the steel buttplate in what he calls the variation 3, type 2 Model 94, which was produced starting with serial 3,400,000 . Serial number 3,400,000 is a 1971 vintage Model 94.

1974 has an alloy reciever
The alloy is steel. The difference is how it was shaped (an early attempt at MIM called scintering). It makes a difference in how it takes a finish, but it is still a strong, steel receiver.
