1886 Winchester rear sight.

Post by WRDSMTH »

In which direction should the rear sight of an '86 Winchester be driven out for removal or does it matter?
Also, any ideas on freeing up the little insert in the rear sight? It is very delicate and I do not want to damage it.

From left to right (Looking down the barrel)
I would soak it in liquid wrench or similar for a few days and carefully/slowly work the stiffness out of it.

Remove the elevator before driving the sight out. Makes it much easier.

So true. And I also put a small piece of leather between the rear blade and the barrel just to keep from scratching the finish.

All great ideas. Use a brass drift and go slowly. Be careful not to whack the forearm with the hammer. Please do not ask me how I know this handy little tidbit of information. Good Luck. 1886.

Thanks for the tips...it is proving to be a bit stubborn. I would not mess with it at all except the rifle is shooting slightly high and left. If I could bring the sight insert down a little, I think at least my elevation would be about right. I really like the fine notch, and despite a "frosty" bore the rifle seems to shoot well with just about any cast bullet that I have tried.

As long as you use a brass punch, you can whack it good. It's probably rusted under the dovetail.
