POLITICS: Interesting comment by a German National

Post by Old Ironsights »

On a local (Chicago) radio show yesterday, the hosts were chatting with their "TV-Tie In" anchor (Ron Magers, ABC Anchor) who happens to be in Berlin this week.

Ron was interviewing some "average berliners" about US politics & the election and one guy had this to say (paraphrase)

"We don't like McCain much - and see him as an extention of Bush... but we have great cultural concerns/fears about Obama... We haven't had good luck with Charasmatic Leaders..."

That is probably the biggest understatement of the last and this century combined...

Creepy. Down right scary.

On a side note, I hear of these people in other countries telling their opinion of our leaders and the election and what-have-you, but if you asked me about some guy running for office in where-ever I'd just be like "Who?". Why are we so interesting to everyone else? Maybe I'm just ignorant 'cause I don't have T.V.?

Simple, the US has had a HUGE impact on culture around the world. Ever since World War II when we pulled the world back from the brink of despotism and then went on through the Cold War years to influence via exportation of everything from movies to Coca-Cola besides meddling in local politics - we've influenced the world in ways folks in the US have no way of understanding since most have never lived outside of the US and most of those who have have lived in a variety of different enclaves separated from the common folk. So, our choice of president is VERY important to the rest of the world. How will he react to various situations. In what way will he influence international affairs? Does he reflect the world's (socialist) mentality, or is he a traditionalist who will reflect the values that made the US great? There's a lot of questions folks have and with reason - the US still influences the world all out of proportion to our relatively small population. For what it's worth, the socialist bent of the US press/media is NOTHING compared to the extreme leftist bent of the media in most of the rest of the world. So undoubtedly the US press' darling is going to get HIGH marks from the rest of the world.
