Garrett's Woodleigh-Weld Core JSP

Post by Tennessee Hayre »

Well I have made the purchase of a box of Garrett's 350 grain Super Jack ammo for my 45-70 GG. I will use the Hornady 325 grain for practice. I plan to go out to the range in a few days after I receive the ammo and get zeroed for deer season. (What do you all think about the Super Jack ammo from Garrett.) They better do wounderful things cause it cost me $94.00 with shipping. :)

Now this is just MY opinion but for DEER the factory 300 gr. loads are all that's needed.

You are right, % 100 , but what I have been looking for is a good soft point that i can use on everything. I have used the 180 grain power points for years and love them for the old .308 and the .300 win mag. Now I believe I have found a very good bullet for the 45-70. One box should last for a long time. I just wanted to see if anyone else have used them. I am not worried about expanding bullets on the 45-70 unless Im shooting bears and such. Black bears is all we have here in Tn. But if I need it ,then on tough animals the Super Jacks should do it. That was my thinking behind it!! One other thing is You get 2000 fps with this ammo which should give me some range. Thank you for your input

Ii don't mean to imply that you're wrong, I only mean to say that it isn't necessary.

However, since you brought it up, I should mention that forum "by-laws" demand that you post a full review of your experiences with this bullet to include photos of bullets (fired and unfired), dead animals, happy kids next to dead animals/ammunition/rifles, and spouses eating/cooking/admiring dead animals.

I was exited to try the 405 gr Woodleighs for 45-70@ 2000 fps but ended up disappointed. We had a cow head and hide from a fresh kill. We rolled up the hide behind the head. I fired 3 rounds at 50 yards and 3 at 25 yards. Most of them didn't make it out of the head. Now granted this is skull bone, skin, brain and tissue and more bone, but I expected more. The recovered bullets were not nice mushrooms but rather jagged, and in quite variable states. The lack of consistency combined with poor penetration turned me off to that bullet. I understand you are trying the 350's so I cannot comment on them specifically, but I hope they perform better for you than the 405's. Here are the photos of some of the 405 gr Woodleighs:

For your intended purposes, I would have encouraged you to purchase the 350gr Kodiak bullets @ 2000 fps. This is the exact same loading that Wild West Guns turns out in their 457WW cartridge, but in 45-70. I have shot numerous animals with ho-hum repeatable mushrooms and penetration. The bullet expands on animals as light as 150 pounds and just as well on a buffalo and a longhorn. Here's one photo of the 350 gr Kodiak recovered. You can purchase the 350 gr Kodiaks for $48 per box - 1/2 of what you spent. Good luck and please let us know how they turn out for you!

For your hunting in Tenn., get a little Lee Loader and put about 40-45 grains of H4198 (that's no where near max) behind an inexpensive 405 grainer and you will be King of the Hill.....The first box will pay for the Lee Loader.

My question would be ? Did the 405 bullet have a heavy jacket like the garrett ammo. Randy said he has done this to keep the bullet from doing what you have just posted. By the way thoses bullets look like they have been through H##3#3##

According to Woodleigh AU, the jacket thickness is the same in both weights.

Let's see:

$94.00 paid by "Tennessee Hayre" for Garrett's .45-70 ammo includes shipping. Garrett's price listed on his website for said ammo = $80.00

$80.00 ÷ 20 = $4.00

5-rounds minimum to sight in and confirm sight in = $20.00

911 Call for ambulance = free

Lifetime supply of heart medicine = 25% less than Garrett's ammo over same period

PRICELESS!!!!

I always look at the bright side of everything  Hey if I plan on shooting tough stuff I'll just pull out the 540 grain hammerhead. I'll probley fire a round of the 350 weld core into some live timber and just see what happens. But I do believe they will be fine for what I need then for. I believe they will be better then the 325 flex tips.
