More Win 94AE Trapper 44 Mag Questions.

Post by Bullard4075 »

I went today and picked up the Trapper I bought the other day.

Looks in perfect shape, can't find a scratch on it.
The feller is thinking of going to gunsmithing school.
Don't know if that is a good thing or not.
Came with a ziplock bag of parts, 200 new Win cases , RCBS Carbide dies and extra RCBS Taper Crimp die.
Instruction book in FOUR languages !!! THAT pi**es me off.
What looks like a mainspring - why would he change that ?
The original plastic buttplate. The replacement recoil pad does not look thick enough if this thing kicks
as much as some of you (and he) says it does. We will see when I shoot it.
And I haven't shot it yet but have sat a looked at it a good bit and and pondered.
Some thoughts and questions come to mind.
The saddle-ring that screws into the side. Does anyone use this for anything ??
The serial number is 564992XX , can anyone tell me date of manufacture ?
It feels smoother than my Win 94 30-30 but then it looks like it has fractionally shorter action geometry.
There is two screws (plugged) in the top of the action. Scope mount screws ?? Maybe used with the rear dovetail?
It has a type of rear receiver/ghost-ring sight I've never seen before. I'll sent pics when I can remember how!
OOps I found it on the net - http://www.gunaccessories.com/ExpressSi ... t-ring.asp --- left hand picture.
On the front sight, a white line goes all the way to the top of the sight which causes me not to have a clear definition of where the
top of the sight is. Black magic marker may solve that. Once again shooting it will be the final judge.
I suspect this will be a fun gun shooting mostly light plinking loads.
However I have already fitted it to the from seat of the Ford PU and it sits there like it's home -- I swear you could see it putting it's feet up looking for it's slippers.
240 Keith SWCs over 19 or so grains 2400 will most likely be what the magazine will be kept stocked with. I'm kind of a one load guy.
I think the barrel is twisted 1 in 38 so 300 SWCs might cluster slightly closer -- I got 500 of them I've never used.

OK,OK I've rambled on long enough. Thanks guys.
I'll go to Photo Bucket and try to remember how to post pictures. I did it once before a couple years ago.

It's really nice to get them like that.

The feller is thinking of going to gunsmithing school.
Don't know if that is a good thing or not.
It's probably good if he has the aptitude for it. Seems there's a lack of good gunsmiths now.

Came with a ziplock bag of parts, 200 new Win cases , RCBS Carbide dies and extra RCBS Taper Crimp die.
New brass is good, RCBS carbide dies are very good, and you'll probably not need the taper crimp die. For .44 Mag loads a good strong roll crimp is better. That you will find in the die sets seating die.

Instruction book in FOUR languages !!! THAT pi**es me off.
Winchester sold them all over the world. Nothing to get irritated off about.

What looks like a mainspring - why would he change that ?
The rebounding hammer actions have an extreamely heavy main spring. Equally heavy trigger pull and usually a lot of creep. The previous owner may have used a lighter Wolff spring to help the action work easier.

The original plastic buttplate. The replacement recoil pad does not look thick enough if this thing kicks as much as some of you (and he) says it does. We will see when I shoot it.
Kick??? Yes with the hotter heavier bullet loads these light weight Trappers can stomp you pretty good. Even my little .45 Colt Trapper gets invigorated when I shoot the heavy 300gr loads.

And I haven't shot it yet but have sat a looked at it a good bit and and pondered.
I do that sometimes. My wife thinks I'm crazy. After all it's just a dumb gun, you got more just like it.

Some thoughts and questions come to mind.
Questions are good. They mean your brain hasn't rusted up yet.

The saddle-ring that screws into the side. Does anyone use this for anything ??
Yes. Some take it off and use it to toss in the junk box. Others buy one of Juniors ( a former member who got ran off by certain other members due to his political opinions - he's a democrat ) saddle ring sling.
Juniors Site: The Frugal Outdoorsman: http://www.castbullet.com/index.htm The saddle ring sling is down on the bottom middle in the purple links.

The serial number is 564992XX , can anyone tell me date of manufacture ?
Nope, somebody here has a list of some kind, but I don't.

It feels smoother than my Win 94 30-30 but then it looks like it has fractionally shorter action geometry.
The pistol caliber Win 94s do have a shortened action throw. It isn't enough to be short like the CAS guys like, but it's significantly shorter than the standard 94s.

There is two screws (plugged) in the top of the action. Scope mount screws ?? Maybe used with the rear dovetail?
There are two screw holes on the top of the receiver ring just over the barrel, and two to the rear besides the breach bolt. These are scope base holes.

It has a type of rear receiver/ghost-ring sight I've never seen before. I'll sent pics when I can remember how!
OOps I found it on the net - http://www.gunaccessories.com/ExpressSi ... t-ring.asp --- left hand picture.
I can't get to the pic you linked too by copying and pasting, it redirects me to the home page. However from your original post I can. The rear sight is an XS Ghost Ring. From what I hear a good set up.

On the front sight, a white line goes all the way to the top of the sight which causes me not to have a clear definition of where the
top of the sight is. Black magic marker may solve that. Once again shooting it will be the final judge.
It's an XS front sight. Some guys here say the white stripe shows up real good in the dark woods, while the black outer edges works good for targets. I don't know, I've never used one.

I suspect this will be a fun gun shooting mostly light plinking loads.
Light plinking loads can be fun, but shooting loads like that from a gun like this is like driving a NASCAR racers to work and back on passenger car tires. A .22 RF would be a better choice.

However I have already fitted it to the from seat of the Ford PU and it sits there like it's home -- I swear you could see it putting it's feet up looking for it's slippers.
Sounds like a really nice fit.

240 Keith SWCs over 19 or so grains 2400 will most likely be what the magazine will be kept stocked with. I'm kind of a one load guy.
OK, that sounds more like it. A good solid load.

I think the barrel is twisted 1 in 38 so 300 SWCs might cluster slightly closer -- I got 500 of them I've never used.
I'm not sure what the twist on the later Win 94AE Trappers is. You might check the link in this thread, lots of info.

Anyway if it is 1-38 it will do for the 240gr up to somewhat more. I just don't know how much more. I've read lots of conflicting reports and have no personal experience with the .44s.

OK,OK I've rambled on long enough. Thanks guys.

Your're welcome and please do get a pic posted. Did we tell you we like pics? Flat nutty about them actually.
