.30-30 Accelerators... Are there any .35 sabots?

Post by Old Ironsights »

I wonder how a .357 Accelerator would work...

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 22 Rem. Jet was a necked down 357 that was supposed to give around 2400 fps and ended up only giving about 2000 fps out of an 8+ inch barrel. If a sabot was employed it would seem you would have a little more case/powder capacity and not have the problem of the cases backing out of dirty chambers like the Jet did and locking up cylinders. Not sure this would be a problem in a levergun with a bolt holding the cartridge in place.

The only sabot manufaturers I have found are from these guys http://www.sabotreloadingpro.com/home for 30 caliber rifles. I personally would like to have them available in 45C. I posted early this year I was going to get some and try them out. New 308 and 45 moulds ended taking up my time and I have not got around to ordering any for testing.

Sabots are the wave of the future if you ask me, as we see lead banned, bullets regulated, and wind up having to make do with what we have. Sabots can make a given round very forgiving, and very potentially fast and accurate, as well.

I wish they made them in all bore sizes - they can't cost that much to make!

AJMD429,
I think you are on to something here, in multiple caliber combinations; one rifle could become many.
This would be a perfect way to make an existing .30-.30 into a .25 Bullberry.

I recall reading an article on line that I think was penned by C.E. Harris about materials he used to make sabots out of. It was a Finnish web site and I had some trouble getting it translated but it was very interesting.

I have used teflon pipe tape to patch (which is sort of the samething but not exactly) to shoot 30 caliber bullets out of 32 caliber barrels ( and likewise I want to try shooting 35 caliber bullets out of 38-55) with some success. Maybe you could build on that?

I think the interesting thing would be having a few long-range HV .224 spitzers to drop up the pipe while out hunting...

I don't know why there aren't more of them. They are probably just turned on a lathe out of plastic stock.

Actually, if you look at them they have to be injection-cast.

I believe your point of impact would be drastically different at any kind of range.

When I tried some of the Remington 30-30 Accellerator loads years ago, they hit over a foot higher than the standard 150 gr. loads at 100 yards.

Would be an entertaining project though.

That's what pre-set click-adjustable sights are for...

Actually, I already have 2 different sights on my 92... my Peep and my fold-down buckhorn. One for each load...
