Fallow deer

Post by t.r. »

Fallow deer are found throughout the world. Originally, they were found in Israel, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Jordon. But Roman conquerors transported fallow deer to many areas around the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Fast forward a thousand years or so: Kings gifted each other with fallow deer and other exotic animals. Wherever fallow deer were placed they thrived. George Washington rec'd several breeding pairs from the King of Denmark that were released on his Mt. Vernon estate.

Fallow deer are terrific trophy animals. Mature bucks weigh 175 - 200 lbs. They come in three color phases 1) chocolate brown 2) spotted 3) white. Antlers are simply amazing. I once took a buck at a hunting ranch in Texas with 27 points!! No kidding.

Many American hunters are deeply focused upon white tailed deer. But in my opinion, fallow deer antlers are more impressive! You're allowed to disagree. (politely please) I apol0gize for the shaky photo, guess I was a bit excited at the time.

Nope, not me in this photo. It was sent to me by a friend in Vermont. Truthfully, I never met this hunter but I admire his trophy, shooting ability, and choice of rifle!!

The antlers look like there is a 'reindeer' gene in there somewhere. Are they just in 'game farm' type environments here in the US?

Joe (86er) has a few very nice Fallow bucks on his hunting concession in Texas, I agree they are the most beautiful of the deer clan.

VERY good eating. Actually prefer it to whitetail.
I got a nice doe on 86er's place in PA last year.
Love to pop a nice buck like that.

So that was shot at Wild Hill Preserve in Fairlee Vermont. Just across the river from NH. They are interesting animals. I know that there are free ranging herds in the US. I have heard of them in Texas , Florida and I want to say they are found in a few other states.
