The AC-47 in the original picture was one of the prototypes for the then-new gunship program, with one of several different armament configurations tested, in this case multiple twin mounts of air-cooled .30-cal Brownings. They also tried three and four single .50-cal M2 mounts, but finally settled on the triple 7.62 minigun setup as the most effective for the mission purpose.

Side note: The C-47 gunship was originally (and only very briefly) designated the FC-47 because of the firepower, but the fighter community had an a-one, first-class conniption fit over the thought of a DC-3 transport being typed as a 'fighter,' so the AC-47 ('A' for attack) designation was assigned to the killer Gooney Bird.
