Uberti 1873 Special Sporting half Oct./Round. 24.5" 44-40

Post by 1886 »

I just ordered one. No need for the rifle but when did need ever matter? I was taken by it's beauty. Any owners out there who would care to share their experiences? I would be most grateful. Thanks. 1886.

They look to be beautiful rifles...I just have the standard fare so far, working on a '73 musket though.

The one on the bottom....standard 24.5" Octagon rifle. Made in 1893, but was refurbed by previous owner.

Mine was the best shooting 44-40 I ever had. It would put 5 on a playing card all the time every time from 100 yards. I wrote it up for NCOWS and then passed it on to a friend as it was not suited for competition. I sure wish I could get it back!

I have the Uberti 24" octagon barrel rifle. I have shot a BUNCH of steel critters with it, equipped with the Marlbles tang sight and the Lyman 17a front. Laser Cast 180 grain bullets sized .431, 10 grains of Blue Dot, priceless!! :)

I slugged the bore. It measures .428". I ordered some sample brass from Starline. I will be able to compare the results between W/W brass and the Starline variety. Starline brass supposedly has thicker necks and thusly greater neck tension. Adaquete neck tension is a potential bug-a-boo with the .44-40. I have some Bear Creek Supply .430" 200gr FP bullets. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Bear Creek, they produce a great moly covered soft cast bullet that gives superior results with mild, easy shootin' loads. They easily obturate at 10,000 psi. No leading, as long as they are not driven too hard, and easy clean up are just some of their virtues. They are also inexpensive and Steve will pay the freight if one buys $70.00 worth (one can mix and match). I am encouraging him to become a sponsor of the forum. I will also get some .429" samples to compare. I think I will try Trail Boss powder and RL-7. We will see. Pics coming. 1886.
