Tell me about the .32 WSL...and a price check

Saw one today but I have no information other than it's a 1915 production model, the .32WSL eveolved into the .30 Carbine round and the only place I've found with ammo so far is asking $40/20. :shock:


The price check is a Marlin/Glenfield 36G in decent shape (NRA Good I'd say) for $325. I thought it was unusual in that it had the Marlin logo on the bbl as well as the Glenfield logo. I've never seen both IIRC. Receiver is factory d&t on top as far as I can tell.

THE 32SPECIAL IS NOT--NOT!!--THE 32-20 NOR IS IT REMOTELY A RESEMBLANCE THERE OF. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 30CARBINE.
THE 32SPECIAL IS THE 30-30 EXPANDED TO TAKE .321" BULLETS, THE SAME DIAMETER AS THE 32-40.

I knew it wasn't a .32-20 or .32WS but I thought I read the .32WSL was the basis for the .30 Carbine. Maybe just the brass was... :?

I think awp101 is speaking of the old winchester auto loader in .32 winchester self loader (WSL).
Break on through to the other side!!!

The .32 WSL and .35 WSL were a couple of underpowered rounds chambered in Winchester's first centerfire autoloader, the model (19)05. They were followed by the .351 WSL in the model (19)07, and the .401 WSL in the model (19)10.

And from what I'm reading, they've been named two of the most useless rounds ever devised. :shock:

I went back and looked, it's been d&t on the left side for a scope at some point. At least they had the courtesy to put the screws in when they took the mount off. :roll: For a 93 y/o rifle it's not in bad shape other than the d&t. No cracks I can see in the wood, doesn't appear to have been refinished, easily 70%+ IMO, AND it comes with the mag. I can't imagine how difficult one of those would be to source.

The shop is asking $525-ish but it's such an odd duck I might be able to talk them down if it's even worth fooling with.

It's a REALLY neat action though! :D

The other SL Winchester had available was the 401SL...My readings tell me some thought it had too much recoil... All of this from a C.O.L. of 2 inches..Interesting paper ballistics from back in the day :
401 200gr MV 2142 fps ME 2038 fp
401 250gr MV 1875 fps ME 1952 fp
30 US Army 220gr MV 1997 fps ME 1949 fp
45-70 405gr MV 1317 fps ME 1562 fp
