I tried the Williams WM-96 peep.

It needs a screw hole drilled through it's front tongue & one hole D/T'd in the top-center of the scope groove area.

It has a small elevation adjustment, and a sliding gib-locked windage adjustment - and just about lines up with the issue sights on my Henry H001 levergun, when it's in the full down position.

Ah, these are made as an insert for 96 Swedish Mauser rear sight, I recently installed one on my son's 1916 (93) Spanish Mauser though it took some fitting BIG improvement especially in windage adjustment over the military site (no windage), and dropped the elevation to hit right on at 50 yards (military sights a foot high at 50).
Inventive adaption I must say on your part Pete.

I went a different route on my Marlin 39.
Used Winchester 96 rear peep in barrel dovetail.
