OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
When I sat down this evening to see whats up on the forum
+/- 25% of the posts were politics...
Are you guys as sick of it as I am?
Maybe we need a separate area for politics...like the classified section...
I dont know...but seeing this stuff all the time ...puts me in a bad mood!
Just the name "obama"...... ticks me off!
I would rather read about what up with you guys and what kind of
toys you have...as in leverguns
Oh welllllll.....

No. I'm not as sick of it as you are. I rather enjoy the variety of posts, and I don't think that those subjects should be segregated from the rest of the forum. I disagree with your classification of those posts as "stuff".RIHMFIRE wrote:When I sat down this evening to see whats up on the forum

That said, I greatly enjoy the on-topic posts related to leverguns also.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
I do agree with you, I'm sick to death of it. If there was something new, that would be different. But it's all the same. Obama this, Obama that. McCain something else. It got old months ago. And yet we still keep hearing it. It seems like every other post is telling us how the US is going to hell in a hand basket. Well, maybe it is, but enough is enough.RIHMFIRE wrote:When I sat down this evening to see whats up on the forum

I don't think we need to segregate the political subjects, but I sure wish they could be toned down and limited to usable and positive information.

OTOH we could become like the Muzzleloading Forum and do nothing but argue whether or not your patch must be oriented horizontally or contraaxially....
Really, how many Marlin vs Winny posts can you have without imploding?
Our Levers ARE "politics". Because sure as shooting we WILL lose them sooner than later.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
I pretty much skip the political posts regarding election woes. They do get tedious at times, and I agree with Joe that for the most part they are pretty similar. Political posts regarding new laws affecting our gun rights are something we do need to know about however. When the place becomes overwhelmingly polical, its time to change the format or take steps. Many people don't come here for the political discussion and truthfully, I think there ARE better places to dicuss politics than here except for our gun rights. JMHO.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
The posts I'M sick of are the posts about whether or not we should have political posts!
Sometimes it seems like that dead horse can't quit getting beat all over again.
Most of us are considerate enough to put "OT" in our post title if it isn't strictly "leverguns" and the little buttons and mouse on your computer will allow you to skip those posts. Heaven forbid there be any discussion around our "campfire" other than what twist rate is best for No. 2 alloy in a .50-95 vintage Somethingorother.
The sad fact is (and don't blame those of us for bringing it up - WE didn't create this social situation) that if you want to enjoy shooting a levergun (or a BB gun, for that matter) ten years from now, you'd better be on top of things politically. It's kind of like posts about reloading accidents where guns blow up - depressing, but vital to know about.
Yep - you can subdivide a forum so much that there's a different category for the .38-55 fans who don't want to read any "trash" about the too-modern .44 Magnun, and that's fine, but it makes the whole thing kind of "cliquey" and for many of us, we have a few topics/guns were mostly interested in, but we ENJOY reading about the others we'd never be exposed to if everything were micro-segregated. And that often INCLUDES politics; seldom does any source from the "mainstream" media even cover issues affecting guns, and if they do, it is generally biased and inaccurate.
I don't question the need for "political" topics, as this is an election year in a nation about to ban firearms ownership via any backdoor they can find unlatched. What I DO question, is do we need every full moon to have yet another complaint post against "OT political" topics? Those are way more annoying than the actually informative political ones.
Sorry to rant, but I feel like one of the things I resent about many gunowners is that they have an "ostrich" mentality - as long as they have THEIR guns, they don't get off their duffs enough to preserve the freedoms they take for granted so that their children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy leverguns (or whatever gun type they happen to enjoy) in the future. That seems selfish, shortsighted, and part of the reason we've got so many stupid laws on the books already.
We can't ALL retire, move to some ultra-rural homestead, and afford to ignore the political future. Some of us live in cities, or anti-gun states, or have children we want to grow up in a free nation, and we can't AFFORD to ignore the real world legislation which even NOW affects our hobby, and our freedom.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
AJ, take a deep breath, Buddy! I think your being a little unfair to those complaining as the number of complaints are far outweighed by the number of political posts! If you look at the front page of this forum at this moment, there are 13 posts regarding politics on the front page alone. Now, I'm not suggesting changing anything, but on the other hand, having been here for Leverguns versions 1, 2 and 3 (like a few of us), I think I can assuredly say it was never intended to be a politically dominated forum! Lord only knows, Terry Murbach would agree with me on that!
Were allowed to discuss what we want under the present rules of the forum. That means other forumites have a right to complain as they "live" here too.
I don't think we have reached any sort of "critical mass" right now regarding the subject of politics, and I think things are going pretty well right now overall. Lets try to keep it that way. I haven't seen a disrectful post in a long time between members. That is the important thing, and is how Paco expects us to act.
On the other hand, if a member finds that the bulk of his/her posts are related to politics more than guns, or politics involving firearms in general, he/she could probably find a better/happier place for that. I'm not suggesting that anyone should leave, FAR from it. But you might find a more receptive forum with more like-minded individuals for that type of subject matter.
The important thing is that everyone seems to be making a real attempt at being civil, and that's what makes this a fine place to be. When we loose that, this forum will be experiencing is own "decline" just like our society. I'm no moderator, and I don't speak for the owners of the forum or the moderators. This is just my opinion.
I like Ganjiro's fishing stories just fine as they distract me from all the grim things happening right now. Bring on the fish!

We are literally discussing life and death issues... and Savage vs Marlin vs Winny sort of pales by comparison.
America as we have known it is coming to a close - regardless of who is elected - and those of us who believe in the constitution had better be willing to talk about it while we are still "allowed".

Well, that's one I've never tried. I've used bolt action, break action and revolver on fish - but never a levergun. OI - the key to shooting fish is to remember that water refracts light. If you aim at where you see the fish you WILL miss. You need to hold under them. A 32 gauge with 2T shot does good on fish, it provides more margin for shooter error than a 22 LR does...

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
Pretty simple - don't read the OTs. This has been brought up many times in the last few years and the management's position has been clear in that it will stay the way it is. Someone said guns and politics are inseparable and it is more so all the time. Look at what the democrats are doing with the laws in CA.
Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
You know, of course, that I go to a lot of trouble to make sure that the political posts are labeled "POLITICS" and the off topic posts are labeled "OT" and if you don't want to read them you can pass them by. I also go to a lot of trouble to edit out the cussing some of you seem to think is necessary as a part of the English language.
If you don't want to read it, don't. If you want to respond do so in terms that your 8 year old daughter/niece/sister could read without embarrassing you.

Hobie, I wasn't aware that you were not only labeling posts as OT, but also editing language. Pretty spooky.
Old Iron sights, not disagreeing with you on what you said about it being an important election year. To be honest, I want to say that I have learned a lot from you and FW's posts. I choose to read the political threads when and where I want to. Most of the time I don't want to comment as I don't think its time well spent, or I don't feel I know enough on the subject. Its also better for me to spend my energy writing my congressman then use it here "preeching to the choir". That's just my personal thing as I work in public education and already have to help anyone and everyone, even if it means trying to save them from themselves. Saving the terminally screwed-up from themselves is tiresome. My energy's are limited.
On the other hand, I have learned that emailing congressman or governors doesn't do anything that I can tell. All I get is automated responses, and sometimes I get them AFTER the matter has already been decided. So, I'm going to start resorting to phone calls instead. Emails don't mean a thing.
Yeah, and I will miss George Carlin too. He was special....
I think collectively, things are pretty well balanced here right now. We all play our part to keep it so.

No way to really avoid them. I hang around here for many reasons, including variety, but one of the main ones is I am proud to be associated with so many strong freedom-loving patriots (both here and abroad). With so much at stake in this election - and such poor choices for us to consider - a lot of discussions on politics are bound to happen among us. Again, I'd say we are all a bit more concerned and engaged than the average smuck walking the streets!

I really try to maintain a Rational ballance. I am not a "conspiracy theorist", i.e., I don't ge into the 911/JFK/Bildeburger/etc stuff. What I DO try to do is make and cross-post associations between events, actions and History.
I have a great deal of research at hand that discusses the major societal shifts that are occuring...and NONE of them are motivated by RKBA, Economics or Social Policies. They are straigh longitudinal studies of societal trendlines.
From these apolitical trendlines I can interpolate certain specific and On Topic (RKBA) shifts in public policy and how they are likely to play out...
And IMO we are in for a societal crisis in the next 4 years that will make the Depression and FDR's attempt at establishing Socialisim look like a May Picnic.

O.I., I believe you. I was just reflecting on myself and what energy I have to post. I confess, I don't understand everything of what you just posted even. You have put a lot of work into your research, and I respect that. So, while I wasn't going to go into here on this thread, here's my idea.
Lead us.
Help unite us, our opinions, to have an impact somehow. All of us venting here is, IMHO, "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."-Shakespeare
Not refering to you or anyone here, just that our energy's are not being used in a constructive manner.
Is there some sort of petition we could make to a state, or governor, or even the U.S. Supreme Court? We would have to use our real names, with zip codes, I suspect. I think it would be better if we also wrote our own comment on the petition, not just sign on to someone elses. I think it would have more impact. Then sent off a hard copy of some sort.
Anyhow, I suspect you know more about all this than me. So, what would you suggest? I would also like to see FW get involved as he seems pretty educated on political stuff, although I certainly don't always agree with him or his choice of language.
Judging from the responses on this thread, a lot of people are deeply concerned about the political situation. So, lets collectively do something about it!
I think we could have more of an impact than just acting as individuals. No, this is not a joke. I'm dead *******' serious.
I'm going to PM you my personel cell number. I hope to be on the road tomorrow by 9am at the latest, Pacific time. Your welcome to call me if you want.
Your friend,

I would like to object to threads that contain post by people that are smarter and have better language skills than I. You know who you are. Makes anything I muster up look like dribble.
We need labels like "IQ130+" or "OVER-ANDREWS-HEAD", then I could skip them and go on with my "simple" life.
But seriously, the RKBA stuff is great and even the canidate stuff is good to read, but, you don't have to read it if you don't want to. It's that simple.

OK, I confess my ignorance. What does RKBA stand for? I may be uneducated in "internet speak" or "political speak" but I'm willing to learn. And I'm willing to lend my support to whatever the board members want to do here. Please advise!

I like em, I don't listen to the radio anymore and Leverguns.com is my only source of news and information.
One of my first posts was a request for recipes for game, yet, no one was worried we were going to turn into a cooking forum.

I don't know if I'm depressed or oppressed, but reading Political Posts increases the feeling... (Remember, it's NOT paranoia, if they're out to get ya)!
But, like Sobenk, I get my info from here and a coupla other forums, or thru emails friends send me. If it's not important to my friends, it probably ain't important to me, (and I include you guys in that). Some I read, some I don't; try hard NOT to respond. If they were in a separate listing, I probably wouldn't read any, I seldom look in the Classifieds.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
FWIW...politics DO involve our firearms ownership and usage. almost every election, whether it be a local town or national, involves firearms in one way or another.
it's been opined here that we need to "keep abreast" of what's going on if we're to preserve what we have left. as sure as the sun rises and sets, there are those in our government, at all levels, who would deprive us of what we have under the name/guise of "public saftey...for the good of all..."
if we are to protect ourselves from the likes of those, we MUST be well informed of the issues and be prepared to deal with them as need be.
IMO, the best way to protect what we have, it to go on the offensive...remove those from office that would deprive us of our firearms or do not elect them to begin with. with that in mind, we must know what we're dealing with, hence, posts involving the politics involving firearms (directly and indirectly) i believe are acceptable in this context.
as an example: i 'stumbled' across a letter from the BLM that possibly could affect my wifes parents land in wyoming recently by way of a firearms forum. it was involving the habitat of the greater sage grouse. they're going to 'clamp down' on public use as the greater sage grouse may be entered into the ESA as a result of the "publics use" of their habitat.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
I like the Political Posts. I do have to take it all with a grain of salt however. I find that too much of that has me looking for jackbooted thugs at the door and black helicopters. There have been many "the sky is falling" posts. Those are a little scary until I remember that the Bible speaks of these times as the last days. Maybe we really are living the last days. In that case there is nothing we can do to turn the tide but pray.

willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." - John F. Kennedy

I will repeat, it is edit the language (I use BLUE to note the replacement word/phrase) or delete the post. Which do you think is preferable?CowboyTutt wrote:Hobie, I wasn't aware that you were not only labeling posts as OT, but also editing language. Spooky? I think it is spooky just how many people can't utter/type a single phrase without even one "cuss" word.
As to the relabeling. I can delete improperly titled topics as well. Is that preferable?
No, I'm not being funny and I'm not taking your comments personally, I want to know. I've little enough time to enjoy the forum now. Simply deleting willy-nilly would give me more time to enjoy.

Go for it. I say delete without further consideration any post with profanity. No need for it. Let everyone know that is the policy. If you don't see your post you'll know you should restate it. If anyone tries to bury the profanity delete that too. Create a dummy list for those who tried that cheaptrick and put them on it. I for one will be happy to trust your judgment.
For what it is worth I think Tutt was just trying to be funny with that. Sippin' Whisky?

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
this is the coolest site on the web. part of what makes it that, are the off topics and political posts. conservate talk radio is there if you need to reafirm your beliefs. it's interesting to me anyway, to hear all of the points of view expressed here. wheter or not i agree with them is illrelevant. we all need to get into a good fight once in a while, it keeps us sharp. i agree with most, if u dont like it, pass it by. i wont tramp on your freedoms if u dont tramp on mine.

Sometimes a couple of folks hereabouts are as bad as any Liberal ever hatched on the political correctness front.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Re: OT..OT...OT....Tired of political posts?
I like the way these guys have set up their forum. I also
like their completely irreverent attitude towards politics,
whining, complaints, and suchlike. You wanna complain
about Obama or write a doctoral dissertation on the film
strength of 90W gear oil in the arctic? Go for it - they'll
file it in the appropriate bucket. Don't wanna read the
dissertation or sort thorugh 20 of 'em? Simple - don't
open that bucket. I don't know how much more administrative
effort such a setup requires though.
http://sovietsteeds.com/forums/
This forum is fun, but a coupla folks on it have pretty thin skins.
Some of the OT stuff is, in my not-so-shy-or-humble opinion,
drivel. Some of it is also highly entertaining or informative.
I don't mind rolling with the punches a bit, but I can see how a
little bit more organization might be helpful. But as somebody else
pointed out, it ain't my forum. Enjoy it!

I say "You Da Boss" and with all the work you have to put in to this kind of project, you should do what you think is right (and yes I realize part of deciding what is right is asking others for their thoughts).Hobie wrote: No, I'm not being funny and I'm not taking your comments personally, I want to know. Still the bottom line is that we should be able to avoid swearing, and it isn't unreasonable to expect us to at least title our posts appropriately. And YOU shouldn't have to waste any more time than necessary babying us.
These may be dumb ideas, but would it make things easier for you if:
1. Posts needing fixing just got a "form letter" response in the PM section and you left it to the user to re-post after fixing (you could delete the original or render it unviewable somehow if that is an option). This would save you having to make any changes yourself and "educate" the posters.
2. PM or somehow mass-post some "required reading" before users could post? (I know there is the "please read before posting" type section when you first sign up, and the "stickys" but I also know most of us start putting together our Christmas presents without reading the "directions...")
Anyhow, +++++ on doing a good job so far, and I trust your judgement.
I know I've probably not been your worst problem child, but I also know I'm no little angel.

I do TRY to be good, though - honest...

Y'know the strange thing about having a place where you can exhibit "Free Speech" is it is often occupied with people who have no idea of how it works for other people. Their certain they know how it works for themselves, of course.
A simple definition of Free Speech:
You have to allow people you disagree with to be disagreeable.
You can't shut them up or shut them away, but you can choose NOT to listen, or in this case, read what they have to say.
Anything other than that is not freedom. How would y'all like a special forum for "Whiners and Complainers" Doesn't sound like much fun, now does it? But it's the same difference.
