Lost our pup this week

Post by Ysabel Kid »

We lost one of our dogs this week.

Ruger and Remington (Remi) were litter mates. We got them 7.5 years ago. Both were miniature long-haired dachshunds. Ruger, the male, was a black and tan, and the girl, Remi, copper-colored.
They were the only two in the litter, and inseparable.

The middle of last week Ruger started throwing up. Not unusual for dogs, and something they would get over in a day or two. But by Friday he was still sick so we brought him to the vet. They gave him something to settle his stomach, and he was fine the rest of the day and Saturday. Then Sunday he couldn't keep anything down. We called our vet first thing Monday, and they said to take him to the emergency animal hospital. As I was lifting him up, he had a violent seizure which lasted a minute. He never recovered, so we had to put him to sleep.

You know the unconditional love a dog shows, and how much pet owners love their furry family members. And how much it hurts when they go. :(

Worse, his sister has been looking everywhere for him, and just very depressed. At night she howls for him, and it is one of the most sorrowful sounds I have ever heard.

We miss you Ruger.

Jay, losing a dog is the hardest thing I have done. They love us with a purity that surely comes straight from God. We sense that. I have been inconsolable losing my guys, and seizures cost me two that I was particularly attached to.
There are some out there who think only people are important. They are wrong and they just don't get it.
So sorry my friend!

Jay I am really sorry for the loss of your Dog, whenever I read a post like this I remember my own sad feelings of loss over the years.
Saying goodbye to a real loving member of the family is probably the worst feeling a guy can have but poor Remi must be going through hell I hope she settles down in time.

Sorry Jay! A lot of us know how hard it is. Gunny pretty much nailed it.

My greatest hope it that we will see them all again someday.

I hesitated to open this thread because I know the pain associated with losing a dog.

But I’m also convinced that a dog makes me a better person because He reminds me through the dog that it really is not about me and I have responsibilities outside myself.

God bless.

I can empathize Jay. Been there, done that, and signed up to do it again. I am very sorry for your loss, and sorry for Ruger's loss as well. That has to be hard for her to understand. Just sad.

It's hard to lose the little buggers. We lost our little Yorkie to cancer last July.
We had her for 12 years and it broke my heart to bury her.
She had been my constant companion since I retired in 2015.
My strongest condolences on your loss

You lost a family member, I think in summation, that says it all. Family is family, dog, cat or otherwise. It hurts, truly sorry Bro. -A-
