Product Review - XS sight set for Marlins

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Wow.

If you guy's haven't seen the newest rendition of Ashley's sights - now XS, you gotta check em out.

I ordered a set and got in the mail today. Wow - it comes with everything you need to remove the old sights and install the new ones. Front sight is just screw off - screw-on and the rear mounts in the rear most receiver screws (for the newer, drilled and tapped models). And they include two different sized apertures. Even have new screws and locktight.

Now that's complete.

And if you ever want to return the rifle to it's as manufactured condition - no sweat, just reverse.

A great product.

They are good! You can also get a threaded aperture that will accept Williams apertures giving you even more choices.

Yes, they make a nice sight. Not good for me, I experiment a lot with different loads and they dont have the range of adjustmant to get on target with many loads. Stay close to factory with velocitys and there should be no problem.

O.S.O.K., I have a set on a 94 marlin and like them. I need to pick up a set for my guide gun I just picked up. Do you know if they are the same? That's Ashley Emerson on the right in my avatar, I'm on the left, we're holding John Linebaugh up about 2 feet of the ground so he would be our size :D . I met them both about a year ago. Good people.

I put a set on my Marlin 1894 Cowboy .357 and then added the threaded aperture. It has worked real well for me. I usually just use it as a ghost ring, but do ocasionally put an insert in for finer work.

I have a set of XS Sights Ghost Ring Backup Sights on my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 I am amazed how fast and accurately I can shoot with these sights installed.

Here is a 1:43 sec video clip on YouTube of me shooting the above rifle with the XS Sights installed and with 350gr Hornady's @ around 1900fps to 2000fps I haven't chronographed these yet but they are very accurate.

I know I am a bit rusty but you will see the potential of this style of sighting system.

I did this clip in response to a thread that was stating that it is better to carry pepper spray than a firearm to stop a bear attack thus the comments I made in the end.

Wow - good shooting. Was that 50 yards? That reminded me of my cowboy action shooting days - only we used pistol caliber levers - with target loads...

What was the load you were using? Looked fairly brisk.

Wish I could say it was 50 yards but it wasn't it was only 25 yards...

H322 is now the only powder that I use in my 45-70's, I have used almost every powder out there that can be used and have found H322 the best for all weights of bullets.

The load I was using in the video clip was 54grs H322, Win brass, Win LR primers & 350gr Hornady jacketed bullets crimped with a Lee factory crimp die.

I don't like posting loads normally so here comes the disclaimer... :D

These loads are safe in my rifle reduce by at least 15% and slowly work up to what you feel is safe for your rifle I have no controls over what you do so you are on your own if you use this data...

Still very good shooting and perfectly adequate for the stated goal.

When we shot CAS, most could do that at 50 yards - but as mentioned, with pistol caliber, low recoil rounds. But we could do it very rapidly.

I'd have to practice up to do it with a 45-70 with even medium loads. But the nice thing about a lever gun is that the rifle recoils and you cycle the action as you come back down on target and bam - start the next cycle....

I have shot a lot of SASS competitions as well and used a Marlin 1894CB in 45 Colt so understand you comments on that style of shooting.

Where I learnt to shoot lever rifles was as a teenager and thru my early twenty's I would go out with my Browning BL22 22lr and shoot thousands of gophers helping clean out the pastures for the ranchers around my area.

My buddy and I would walk side by side with our rifles shouldered and when we spotted a gopher we would race each other to shoot it.

It got so that I could shoulder the rifle and shoot it before he could get his rifle shouldered.

I was a faster free hand shot than him but he could always out shoot me from a rest.

Getting back to the thread I am so happy with the XS Sight Ghost Ring sights that I am looking at buying anotehr set for my Puma M92 in 454 Casull.
