First Levergun

Post by kmittleman »

Hi All,

Finally after much debating and questioning, I got my first Levergun : a Marlin 336W. Picked her up at Wally World today, probably take it to the range tomorrow. BTW, two questions: what is a good factory bullet for hogs, and also, why does the .30-30 get such a bad rap? I took my first two deer last fall w/ a friend's 336A - both shot at around 50'. One ran off 40' and piled up and the other dropped right in it's tracks. What more can you ask for?

You won't find the 30-30 getting a bad rap around these parts. 8)

I've never heard a bad rap against the 30-30 from rural folks. It's the urban dwellers who seem to make the most fuss. Any good big game bullet intended for 30-30 will do just fine. I tend to hunt with 150's the most because they shoot a bit more accurate in my carbine(s). Try Winchester Power Point or SilverTip for quickest expansion.

This big mulie can not remain on its feet for long after a well placed 30-30 strikes the vitals. Pure nonsense that a 25-06 or 270 or 300 MAG "kills better".

+1 on both counts. Maybe the first - doubt it will be the last (especially hanging around this sorry group of so and so's! ).

I have a number of old Winchesters in a variety of old calibers and I love them all. However, since I have acquired a 1959 vintage Winchester 30-30 carbine, I would have to say (and I do hate to say this) that if I was forced to survive on just one gun for everything, it would be my 30-30 carbine. My 1907 vintage 38-55 carbine would be a close second, however it just ain't as flat shooting as my 30-30 for those 300 yard shots. You got yourself a sweet rifle there and in a classic caliber.

Welcome, nice to have you "SEE THE LIGHT" and make it back home. Now, as has been said above. Where are the pictures.

You're infected now - you NEED a 'companion' gun for that .30-30 - maybe a .45-70 (since it also has a hyphen in the name) or a .32-20. Then you'll need a pistol to match the pistol cartridge or the era. Then a stainless (for bad weather) and a .444 Marlin (in case you meet any new bears that don't respect the .45-70), and a .454 Casull, since it can do almost the same thing as the big boys in a short case. Then a .35 Remington to scope for long range deer or varmints. Then maybe a .22 Hornet. Then...... :?:

Well... when you've mostly only hunted CA, where most of the mule deer are the Coastal Blacktail variety and TX, where, well... they're most whitetails; the short answer is: Yea.

Well, I am no deer expert, but most of the ones I see would fall into the same class as that fellow.
I see far fewer of the smaller ( size & racks ) than the one in the picture

Yep - this one was in my back yard recently - he has 4 or 5 does that show up regularly also and a faun or two -

Only, the hooker is - my house and back yard are within a mile of the geographic center of our fair city - we have a wooded "open space" area behind us of about 20 acres that can't be developed - and discharge of firearms in city limits is illegal !!

We were rural when I bought this house and property in 1975 - such is progress !
