REAL Info About Tinnitus Research

Post by Old No7 »

Yup, Jim's post "got me" this afternoon...

But a few hours later on a keyboards forum for musicians, somebody posted this article about active research on"retraining the brain" via Bimodal Neural Remodulation to not pay attention to the tinnitus sounds. Seems very interesting.

Rock musicians, like shooters, may be prone to this condition due to hearing damage done to their ears.

"Scientists may have the key to treating tinnitus: Retrain the brain", Washington Post article (Click here for the link)

Very interesting. I hope they come up with something before mine gets bad. Mine comes and goes and sometimes it’s annoying.

I don't suffer so much with the ringing varieties of tinnitus so much as the "diesel exhaust rumbling" rarities. As I type this I can hear what sounds to me like an idling piece of heavy equipment in the not too far distance. No one else but me can hear it. Open a door or go outside and there is nothing ! But.....when it is loudest, a bottle of water on the kitchen counter shows definite seismic ripples even when no one is walking across the floor (ah! the looks on their faces when they see that water tremble). Go outside and just the wind and birds tweeting.

b.t.w. , certain pharmaceuticals & heart healthy supplements such as aspirin, fish oils, garlic, ginger, ginseng, etc. tend to cause tinnitus or at least make what you already have louder.

As for retraining my brain, the old lady.....er, pardon.....my beloved bride of almost 34 yrs. has thus far been unsuccessfully trying that experiment for the last 12,204 days !

Darryl, thanks for that link. Too bad the Lenire device is a $3,000 item. I have had tinnitus since junior high -- very high-pitched whine with occasional rushing air sounds. Where is Radio Shack when you need them?

I've grown used to the noise and use it. If I am in a large room and a bunch of people are talking and I can't make out who is saying what, I put in ear plugs and listen to the cicada's.

I have it constantly, I never really notice it, or pay attention to it, It's just another background noise that you get used to.

Sometimes you can lose a lot of hearing and get no tinnitus, sometimes you can lose very little hearing and get a symphony orchestra in your head. I havent lost much hearing but got crickets, whistling, roaring, electrical static, the whole circus. When the specialist asked me what sounds my tinnitus was I said 'all of them ' :D

I get all kinds, but I never notice when I'm not hearing it. As with traffic noise, I am training my mind to consider all the input as breaking water on the shore line . . . I love the sounds of water when the sounds of silence are unavailable . . .

Mine sounds like my very own personal swarm of mosquitos. Don't normally notice it much unless it's quiet or I'm trying to listen to something in the same pitch range. Audiograms show loss, especially on the high end and I do NOT enjoy listening to conversations in a roomful of others talking loudly. In fact, being around loud talkers is almost painful.

Too much unprotected gunfire, ditto for dirt bikes, farm machinery, riding in helos and AAVs and listening to loud music back in the day.

Like the supposed Pennsylvania Dutch saying that I think it was Ed Zern used to use, "Ve is too soon oldt und too late shmardt", it's been single and double protection for shooting and earplugs while motorcycling for years. Sweet Tooth and I both make a point of earplugs when we go to concerts nowadays, but of course we wouldn't dream of it back when we were young fools (instead of the old ones we, or at least me, have become).

It's good to see something that appears to be real progress in combating the issue. Heaven knows I'm tired of seeing clickbait ad links online for BS cures.

I do not really understand what silence is. I can put plugs in and muffs on and still hear the whine of a table saw every second of the day.

You and me both my friend. Constant and non stop. I use huge ear muffs, plus ear plugs, and sold off my 'big boomers' like the 348 Win Model 71. Limit my shooting to lower noise rounds and even then don't shoot as much as I used to. Heck, I hunt deer with my ear muffs and plugs in...just dont want my tinnitus to get worse.

This year will be special in that the cicadas are going to be heavy. I love cicadas. When they are loud enough I get to have a new noise in my head to override the tinnitus.

I have them all the time, day and night, no matter where I am.
One nice thing, if the conversation is boring I can just listen the cicadas in my head.

I hear you, excusing the pun. many years ago I got out of big game rifles for this reason. A 416 rigby CZ550 was the last I owned and in fact I left the shooting sports for several years. Pistol rounds, long barrels and avoiding gun ranges are my style now.
