New rifle load

Post by wvfarrier »

I worked up a wicked rifle load for my winchester 1892 357 mag today.   I am using 38 +p brass (annealed), H110 and the montana bullet works 160 grain hcfn-gc.   I hit 2125 avg velocity (at 7 yards) from a 24" barrel.  Thats 1604 ftlbs of energy with no pressure signs at all!!!!

That looks to me like a mighty handsome and very useful load! I doubt there's a whitetail that could stop it. 8)
Any idea how accurate it is "way out yonder"?

Wow!

Highest I've gone so far with a Zero 158grn JSP bullet, Winchester .357mag brass, 18.0 grns of Lil'Gun with a SR primer is 2,005 fps also out of a 24" barrel. Now that's an easy load with low impact on my brass but I'd have to go compressed to fit more powder in the case.

Edit to add:

The same load out of my 20" carbine produces 1,952 fps as well. And the loads produce good accuracy even out at 200 yds on bowling pins.

I have not accuracy tested them yet, I was just doing pressure tests. I would love to go higher but this is 85% case fill

That looks like a great load. I have a 185 Gr hc LilGun load in 357 brass that clocked 1725 from the Winchester Ranger 94 AE, for 1200 foot pounds, and unk velocity from a smith snubby. Your load will be a good long distance harvester. I never developed the load, thinking 1725 is reasonable from a trapper...

I'm getting right around 1800 with Lilgun in my Henry 41 with 210 jacketed. And it's accurate so I stopped looking for any more loads.

I have some heavy 45 colt loads that are near Paco's levels. They are FEARSOME and would be suitable for anything in the lower 48
