Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
OK, I'll start -- and mine is a levergun too!
I won this sweet l'il Savage 99A in .250-3000 years ago via an online auction from TX, paying far less than I think it would have sold for in a shop in WI, MI or PA. But it arrived with a smooth "orange" stock. After one season of hunting with it, I stripped it and finished it with Cabot's "Gunstock" stain color and many coats of B/C "Genuine Oil" (a low gloss version of Tru Oil), and then I sent it away to be professionally checkered per a pattern I made after viewing many checkered 99s online. She originally wore a larger scope, but I like it better now with the small/light 1.5X to 5X Leupold.
This is the only rifle where I've seen the bullet strike the deer I was aiming at, as recoil from the .30-30s or .308s didn't allow that view through the scope. And I hope I get to see that again this fall.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
This old, worked over '95 SRC / .30-'06 has accounted for more whitetail than any other rifle I own. I was still in college when I bought it, and that $350 was every last dollar I had, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Mine is also a levergun. It's a 1959 Winchester Model 88 in .308. My 165 grn JSP handloads shoot very well in this babe.
I guess I should add my 1949 Savage 99 in .300 Savage to the mix as well. Its got an original Weaver 4x scope with a steel tube. This one likes the 150 grn JSP best.

Darryl, that is one of the handsomest Model 99s I have seen -- and in my favorite of the Savage cartridges. Hope you have the 1:10 barrel twist.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
Thanks Doug,
That first one is responsible for the '95 obsession.
I've had a few others come and go, but these are the current bunch.
Two '06 SRCs, Russian Contract and my grandfather's .35 WCF.
Still chasing an SRC in .303 British. So many of them have corroded bores, but I'll fine one eventually.

My favorite rifle has a lever that you lift up and back to eject the spent round and then you push the lever back forward to load the next. The stock is signed by my late friend Ed Head who worked with Ruger to design this Scout Rifle.

44 Mag seems to be 'my cartridge', from either a Marlin 1894, a Ruger 96/44, a Ruger 77/44, a Ruger Super Blackhawk, or Ruger Redhawk.
Probably accounting for 12, 10, 4, 2, and 2 whitetail over 30-35 years, respectively. Another 20 or so over the years using a Savage M10 muzzleloader, Marlin leverguns in 35 Rem and 444 Marlin, and a BHA levergun in 500 S&W, and a 300 Blackout AR Pistols.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
I have a Savage 114 30-06 in the safe, but I always seem to pick up an old Savage to take to the stand. Can't see over 100 yds from it, so this 1920 Savage 1899H .303 Savage seems to tag along the most. 20" barrel and only a couple ounces over 6lbs.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
When I quit hunting with my modern bolt action rifles, the first old rifle I chose to take hunting was this Ballard Union Hill rifle in .38-55 caliber.
I had shot it a lot at ranges from 100-200 yds. and after some practice at these distances, I decided I'd set the tang sight for 150 yds. where the gun and I were plenty accurate for deer shots, and use the rear barrel sight for anything under that range.
Of course my choice of rifles brought some smiles and chuckles from my hunting partners who found it humorous to say the least to use a scheutzen rifle for deer. But opening morning we trudged the 90 min. hike up our favorite trail to a ridge top, and then we split up to head East and West checking draws. I stopped with my nephew at the first big draw, and we sat waiting for deer to exit, or enter the draw. I'd taken several bucks there in the past, and knew it always held deer; just not sure if any would be bucks or does?
After a short wait a line of does began heading up out of the bottom of the draw, and we counted 14 when the herd ended. I sat there waiting in hopes a straggler might be a buck, but no more came out. We were about to get up and check other draws when I spotted antlers over the edge rising gradually higher in view! I raised my rifle, and cocked the hammer, and sat ready for a shot. My nephew asked me what I was aiming at just as the buck's shoulder rose high enough in view to fire. Rather than answer him I touched off the trigger, and the buck went down. I had guesstimated about 150 yds. so I used the tang sight to aim. A check with his range finder afterwards showed my nephew a reading of 140 yds. Close enough to be right on my point of aim, and a clean one shot kill.
Only issue was after he dropped, he gave one last kick, and rolled all the way to the bottom of the draw, so we had to haul him a lot further than he'd been had he not kicked.
210 lbs., and a 4x5 rack. One of the best and certainly the heaviest bucks I've ever taken. No more chuckles about my choice of rifles after that first year!

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
My Marlin has produced the most but I've had it since 81. My 1971 NRA Centennial is labeled M9d 94 for that purpose, but the same rifle in 72-73 is a Mod 64a. My Mod 94 Carbine hasn't made meat yet, but man I like it, it shoots anything you put in it accurately!
The shed is the 8pts from 2 seasons back. The trail camera pics where from 10/11/17. I killed him on 11/11/17.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I've got a fine old Rem 742 Woodsmaster and Tikka both in 30-06 and a Rem 700 in 270, all scoped, but I've yet to really use them. I've never killed a deer yet with a scoped rifle but I'm about in need one. May use the Tikka this year?

First deer I shot, was actually with a Marlin in 30-30. I was a kid and didn’t own a handgun yet. First and only deer with a rifle, all handguns ever since. Here’s my two favorites.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
Some real beauties in this thread.
I'll make my first entry. It is a 1955 Winchester 94 in 32 Win Spl. Nothing fancy, just your standard carbine for its time. My grandfather bought it new, didn't like it and gave it to my dad some years later. I borrowed it from Dad to hunt with in my teenage years. Skipped school one day in October of 1995 and went hunting. Took my first buck with it and Dad ended up giving me the rifle not long after. I still have this rifle. Here it is.
Don't know why the first pic is sideways. That's not how it is in my phone. Sorry about that

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
Next up, a current production Winchester 1892 Short Rifle in 45 Colt. My first 92, I picked up just about a year ago. Walked into my LGS and there it was, had to have it. I had passed on three other new 92s there over the past few years for various reasons....wrong timing, not in the caliber I wanted, etc. Decided not to let this one get away. Absolutely love the quickness of the 1892, I am a fan.
Not the best pic, but it's all I have at the moment.

Re: Let's See Your... Deer Rifles
You're not alone. I have one too. In spite of using levers of one flavor or another, and being a Winchester guy at heart, the Ruger GSR is a fantastic rifle. It's probably the most practical and best all around rifle I've owned. While I wouldn't want to, I could live the rest of my life with only it as a rifle.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 5:20 am My favorite rifle has a lever that you lift up and back to eject the spent round and then you push the lever back forward to load the next. Since this picture, I've bought a synthetic stock from Ruger. Shaved off about another 3/4 pound, but i prefer the feel of the laminate.I also removed the Ruger flash hider and put on a standard A2 birdcage. Now a standard AR muzzle cover fits over it if I need one.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I prefer the laminate stock as well. Just feels good to me and you can make a .308 that’s too light.

Next up, a Uberti 1876 Centennial in 45-60WCF.
Bought it second hand from a friend near two years ago. Have taken it out but haven't taken game with it yet. It was a little challenging to get it to group descent but it's a descent shooter now. Fun rifle to shoot and pretty easy on the eyes.
