Well, we did it.

Post by wvfarrier »

We rescued a new German Shepherd. He is 10 months old and almost 70#. Zero training or manners. He has a few minor health issues we need to address but shows a lot of potential. The poor guy had his whole world rocked when his owner dropped him off at a rescue and left. The rescue sent him to a foster home who adopted him out but he was returned after a week due to his size. He went to ANOTHER foster home for 3 days before we saved him. The poor kid doesnt know what has happened to his life.

Good for you AND him!!
Is he at least house broken?
Good thing about dogs is they don't dwell on the past. Feed him, love him and he will settle in.

Good for you!
My wife is a member of Shepherds Beyond Borders. They rescue, rehabilitate, and find homes for Shepherds. It's a great organization. We do relays with volunteers to move these dogs to their new homes. The prospective owners are interviewed before the dogs are sent to them.
My wife was transporting a pup one weekend when an adoption fell through. Instead of turning her Jeep around, she just brought Gracie home. She is almost 2 now. Growing into an awesome dog.
Best of luck to you and your new family member.

He bounced around until he found himself a good home. Sounds like a smart dog to me . . .

May take a while before he totally settles in. GSDs are smart and active. I have heard that they like to do a job. Find something for him to do. Helping by carrying dirty clothes to the washing machine, picking up things and putting them in a known place, or just about anything. He will settle in fast when he has a job to do.

Congratulations, I wish you as much luck as I have had with my rescue "WALDO" he ended up being 120 pounds of Rhodesian Ridgeback. He wakes me up for brown bears without barking and pushed me out of the way of a Mojave green rattlesnake on the porch of the southern house. Rescues are GREAT DOGS.
