I bought a real nice original 1886 in 50-100-450 a couple weeks ago. I took it to the Colorado Collectors Gun Show in Greeley, colorado this past weekend and found some more information on it. I already had a letter, but a guy by the name of Tom Adams that had done a small book on the research of the Winchester 50-100-450 rifles, came by with a copy of the actual Winchester ledger where the gun is listed.
There was a lot of interest in the gun and a couple of offers to buy it. I bought it for myself and shooting, so I am not interested in selling it any time soon...

Interesting how proud the spring cover base is to the receiver. I wonder if that's to accommodate the cartridge size.
There's actually a No. 15 up on eBay right now starting at $700. Nice looking sight, but I can see what they mean by not folding down out of the way.
It is a rigid and high sight off the tang, I thought I might hunt with a later folding Lyman sight, but that just doesn’t seem right.
I got this bullet out of the far side of the gopher, just under the skin…

Was that a 300 grain bullet you had loaded up yourself? Did you shoot black in it or some reduced load with 5744 or something of that sort?
It is a 315 grain cast bullet with a gas check over 40 grains of 5744. I use the same bullet in all my 50 caliber rifles, including a Sharps 50-70 carbine, Winchester 1876 50 Express and a Colt Lightning 50 Express...
Again nice photos!!
kind of thought that big 50 would go through a gopher, a 300 H&H with a 110 grain HP ends their day
figure its a lot faster than letting the fleas chew them up to a slow miserable death

The letter states that it has a silver oval name plate on the forend stock. I'm curious, what is that? Original owner's name?
Beautiful documented rifle you have there.
It has the silver plate as ordered, but no inscription…

Oh, neat. Makes you wonder why such a special order rifle never got the engraving.

I know the story about that... My great granddad ordered it for my grandfather's older brother' graduation from Yale... but between ordering it and receiving it, grandpa's older brother was overcome with infatutation with a dancehall girl... and GGDad was so embarrassed he couldn't bring himself to have it engraved... and so it remains to this day! Good enough to be true!
