.480 Ruger

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Has Hornady discontinued loading for this cartridge? Seems like there’s nothing in stock anywhere.

I haven't looked for a while. My stockpile is still big enough.

Discount ammo lists them as being in stock.

I think those places that only take bitcoin or Zelle payments are the only places I see it in stock and I won’t deal with them.

Scott, if you are in serious need, I can send you some brass, and some bullets. You have primers and powder?

The twenty or so I once made from .45-70 were crude but usable in a shoot five and immediately reload five fashion.

Gently turn case between thumb and forefinger whilst applying edge of rim to belt sander until cylinder clearance is achieved.

Mark case and rough trim with bandsaw using a shim between cut and case mouth to level due to case taper.

Finish trim to length.

Debur/chamfer.

Ream as necessary or load and seat then run the whole thing up into sizer sans pin to squeeze o.d. to usable dimensions.

Thank you for your kind offer. But I am not in serious need. I have a double rifle that is regulated for the 325 grain factory load. I have four of those left and I am looking for more.

I have brass and I can make cast loads, just looking for a bit more of what this gun is regulated for.

Have you posted on that rifle before...?

Sounds interesting.

Wow ... that stuff is hard to come by. There's one box here in the nosebleed section at $6.25 a round.

No, I haven’t. But I want to.

Here’s a picture of Robert Leahey getting ready to shoot it.

I’ll work on it.

It may be that I can develop a cast load with some LFN GC and a healthy dose of H-110 but I would like enough factory ammo to have a control.

Converted CZ shotgun? That's a pretty neat little thumper.

A month earlier I could have helped but today all my factory 480 Hornady ammo is packed away for longer term storage. I'm pretty sure I have at least a dozen boxes of Hornady 325 along with a sizable quantity of Speer factory. Today I shoot my reloads almost exclusively. It will be at least a year before I can retrieve my stored belongings.

Thanks for all of your consideration. I’m sure I can figure out a way to make this work.

Ought to be a good hunting gun. I’ve fired it quite a bit and it certainly is accurate enough for the hunting that I do.

Those people at Montana Bullet Works make it hard to want to learn to cast when it's so easy to punch the button on the internet.

I’ve had three guns for the cartridge . Two were Super RedHawks that I actually enjoyed shooting cast in . The third was a Puma lever I had someone order for me , after recieving the gun I paid the guy took it home and put it in the safe for a year and traded it away unfired ,point being once in my hands I didn’t care for that rifle . I’d really wanted one of the Marlin1895RL’s that were supposed to be produced 480 Ruger .

I have a Ruger No. 1 in .475 Linebaugh/.480 Ruger. That’s a really great shooter.

I recall back some 15 years ago south of Hondo, Texas seeing a guy drop a hybrid buffalo using a levergun chambered for this round.
