Spoke to John Linebaugh the other day...

Post by CowboyTutt »

...regarding what actually happened during his ultra long range pistol shooting session that I reported about earlier. First off, I want to say how impressed I was with his honesty and humility. He was very open about what he has learned through his experiments and things he still did not understand. Like all the Shootist's I have spoken with or met, he is quite a guy. Anyhow, he was shooting at 1000 yards, but there did seem to be some confusion on the "18 inch group" that I reported wrong. He was using Frank of Mt. Baldy's Bullets 45 Colt loads using a 310 Keith as I reported. The confusion stems from the fact that they shoot at a large metal buffalo at 1000 yards. In front of the buffalo are 18" metal plates stationed in front of the buffalo in 5 feet increments. They were using a high power spotting scope, and the metal plates help them to determing range to target as they get close to it.

He really wished I hadn't reported it, but since I have, he did indicate that he would "eat his hat" if he wasn't shooting a 40" group at that range on the target once they got "dialed in". This was with a stock Ruger in 45 Colt I believe. He did emphasize that you need a good load that shoots well in YOUR gun to do this.

We talked about some of the more interesting things that he has seen with his penetration tests in wet newsprint and with 3" knucklebones using everything from small caliber handguns to high-powered large caliber rifles. I don't want to give away too much of what he said as I think he means it to be discussed at his seminars, so I'm not going to go into any detail here. Suffice to the say the results sometimes are quite counter-intuitive.

What I really wanted to report, and what he has asked my help in, is whether or not people would be interested in him teaching a seminar near Reno, Nevada. He has the time in his schedule for next year, and a friend has found him facilities he can use. I told him I would DEFINATELY go as it is pretty close to what will be my new home in Ukiah, CA. I think I can "rustle up" a few more guys from NorCal as well as 1-2 Shootist.

He is working on a video that parts of which may see circulation on the 'net. I may help him promote it if he wants the help (he doesn't own a computer and doesn't care to).

Is there anyone else who would be interested in a Nevada Linebaugh Seminar????

Please let me know. I'll keep you guys posted as things develope. Please help me bump this to the top from time to time.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the update. I haven't had time to catch up with him, the last time I called he wasn't in. He's pretty busy with his seminar at the moment. I ran into Todd Corder at the gas station in Cody a few days ago, he was in for the seminar and to do some sightseeing. Real nice guy. We stood out in the cold and talked guns for a long time. Nice to be able to show guns off in the gas station lot without anyone getting excited about it.

I never seem to have either the time or the money at the same time for the seminar when it comes up.
