In about a year the writer will be comparing the 45-70 to the 360 Buckhammer. .
Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
doesn't sound like he hunted much with 45/70, and he missed the superpower solids at moderate velocities thing entirely. reads like an internet AI product to me . . .
Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
One of the best articles I have ever read comparing the .30-30 to other cartridges was in Safari Club's magazine back in the late 1980's. It was a reprint of an early 1900 account of taking a World Record Bighorn in awfully rough country at near 400 yards (if I recall correctly) with the new flat-shooting high velocity .30WCF.

I'm with you there! The deer and boar I've shot with a .45-70 and later a .450 Marlin have gone in one side and out the other. None of the aforementioned critters took more than a step.

I'd like to read that if you can find it. I trolled for it and couldn't get past the recent 30 cal articles. someone might have a copy.... the hot thirty.... it would have seemed awesome when it arrivedJimT wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 1:07 pm One of the best articles I have ever read comparing the .30-30 to other cartridges was in Safari Club's magazine back in the late 1980's. I don't have a copy anymore. It was a column they used to run called "Armchair Safari" or something like that .... Been too long ago ...Grizz wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 5:43 pmI'd like to read that if you can find it. Life's too short to choose... get both! Frankly, I much prefer the 1886 over the 335 sized 1895... a tad heavier it absorbs recoil better, and I believe it's the much stronger action. In a .30-30, either the 336 or mdl 94 is really a matter of personal preference. For me, the Winchester 94 just comes to the shoulder quicker and carries in the hand better.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
Somebody already did that. But I feel this video is heavily skewed to make the 360 the perceived winner. He's using old standard pressure 45-70, 1330fps stated on the box. Obviously the Buckhammer runs at pretty substantial pressure to put up the numbers that it does. There are now quite a few manufacturers offering level II 45-70 that is appropriate for modern lever rifles. Do the comparison, but be fair about it. Interestingly, the comments are turned off .

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
I'll take 30-30 over either the 45-70 or the "maybe obsolete in a couple years" .360.
I've always had several 45-70s around, but just don't get the use and versatility out of them I do with my 30-30 chambered rifles.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
I'm kinda the opposite. I have a couple 30-30's that I love. A 1961 Winchester and a TK Marlin. But I hunt with a 45-70 because some of the critters here are ..big. Dang grizzlies and wolves are moving further south out of Yellowstone every year.
Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
With us it's just big moose and good sized black bears. My kid, however, lives where the big bears live. Still carries a 30-30.
While it may not be ideal in every case, there probably isn't much on this planet that hasn't been killed with a 30-30.
For me, it's mostly laziness. All my 45-70, 45-90, and .348 chambered rifles are just too big and heavy.

If you practice and can hit your target, there is not much a 30-30 cannot kill.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
Well, the .30 WCF certainly impressed Theodore Roosevelt, with its speed and laser-flat trajectory!
I think it was in O'Connor's book on sheep hunting that there was a photo of an incredible ram taken with a .30-30.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
.45-70 is a great classic cartridge. But never forget, it was the ,30-30 that put it and the other big-bore BP cartridges in the shade. They weren't stupid back in them days...

I would take the 45-70. But I seem to have a lot of 30-30.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
My spoiled baby-boomer thoughts exactly...
If I only could have 'one' I'd probalby consider the 35 Remington, actually, just 'because', although ammunition availability if taken into account (or ease of reloading), might alter that somewhat.
It is interesting he only discussed the 'long action' cartridges 30-30, 35 Rem, and 45-70 - what about the 357 Mag, 38-40, 44 Magnum, 44-40, and 45 Colt...? They certainly can compete in the "under 200 yards" category. Perhaps one could complain they have the rainbow-trajectory of the 45-70 combined with the lesser power of the 30-30, but they certainly merit mention in an article discussing 'whitetail and smaller game'.
Oh well, if articles like this give people who are marginally interested in guns something to read and think about and maybe gets them more interested in guns, all the better...!

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
I actually read the article and I thought it made sense and I agree with it.
For hunting DEER the 30-30 will kill DEER just as dead but with much less recoil and with less expensive ammunition.
Seems pretty straight forward to me.
he isn't making any arguments above or beyond the above.

Re: 45-70 vs 30wcf
I complete agree. But then, I already have the perfect "in-between" cartridge. A Marlin 375! Good bear medicine... as in good medicine for bears! Even tho' they're from Chicago, I have nothing against good Bears!AJMD429 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 2:28 pmMy spoiled baby-boomer thoughts exactly...
