Great website Old Pizen Slinger. Thanks for posting.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
Pretty site, but not without its own problems.
#1, he was anti-trinitarian.
#2, he did NOT believe in miracles or any other supernatural act.
#3, he was at the veyr least agnostic on the idea of the Divinity of Jesus.
To elocute these beliefs, he redacted the New Testament to remove all incidents of miracles and anything else he though detracted from what he considered to be the pure, devinely inspired, rational philosophy of Jesus.
Hardly "Christian" in the modern Trinitarian sense.
Jefferson would not be considered to be a "real" Christian by 99% of today's denominations.Consider these words that Thomas Jefferson wrote on the front of his well- worn Bible: ‘I am a Christian, that is to say a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus. I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our Creator and, I hope, to the pure doctrine of Jesus also.’

In an 1803 letter to Joseph Priestley, Jefferson states that he conceived the idea of writing his view of the "Christian System" in a conversation with Dr. Benjamin Rush during 1798–99. He proposes beginning with a review of the morals of the ancient philosophers, moving on to the ethics of the Jews, and concluding with the "principles of a pure deism" taught by Jesus, "omitting the question of his deity."
...
The Jefferson Bible begins with an account of Jesus’s birth without references to angels, genealogy, or prophecy. Miracles, references to the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, and Jesus' resurrection are also absent from the Jefferson Bible.[5] The work ends with the words: “Now, in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus. And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.” These words correspond to the ending of John 19 in the Bible.
Hardly "Christian" in the modern Trinitarian sense.

Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
Jefferson was an unabashed deist and a Christian in the original sense of the word, a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
If Jefferson beleived Jesus rose from the dead and trusted that sacrifice as his only hope of eternal life, Jefferson is alive with Jesus now. That's the only relevant question about any man's faith.

Hmmm...
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
Basically, yes. What I'm saying is our theology doesn't save us, who we trust does.So what you're saying is that a fella doesnt necessarily have to believe in the one true G_d, he only has to believe that the Christ was resurrected to open the door to eternal life?
Hmmm...
3 quick examples:
the thieves on the cross
the children Jesus referred to: "allow the children to come to me"
the disciples, whose theology was totally messed up
AND Jesus claimed to be God: "if you have seen me, you have seen the Father"
so yeah, I believe the simple version is the correct version. And I'm sure I'll
get my theology straightened out sometime in the next fifty years...
and to the friends who aren't interested in discussing religion here, there's no law that says you gotta read every post... if it makes you uncomfortable, don't read it.

I like it too, and hope it's right. I sure don't want to mislead anyone. But I think everyone, including the original pals, over analyzed and over complicated it. Just the simple fact of the resurrection, without any condiments, should be enough of a revelation to totally affect a man's life forever, eh?
An unearned gift. That simple.

Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
Too bad most denominations haven't and still don't believe that. Many actively oppose what they call unionisim & syncretisim, and would consider the position you expressed to be at best "Unitarian" and at worst outright apostacy.Grizz wrote:thank you.FWiedner wrote:I like this message.Grizz wrote:...our theology doesn't save us, who we trust does.

Re: HISTORY: Our Real Roots
I guess you could say I am a "former day saint". I got a lot of comfort and peace when I came to understand this passage of scripture:Too bad most denominations haven't and still don't believe that. Many actively oppose what they call unionisim & syncretisim, and would consider the position you expressed to be at best "Unitarian" and at worst outright apostacy.
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to youGalatians: 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
Like the standard yardstick in the U.S. bureau of standards, it's a benchmark. It tells me that the Gospel is complete and cannot be added to or subtracted from. How reassuring is that? What the Galatians believed is what I believe. It's the old time religion the song is about. And not very religious really. Mysterious and spiritual, yes, but not very religious at all. I hope it makes sense, it's simple enough that even I understand it!
