.41 mag loads?

Post by Walt »

Though one of my favorites, I'm curious what lead bullet loads others shoot in this red-headed stepchild caliber.

I don't shoot many cast bullets in my .41 .. I have several molds but after trying them I settled on one ... by the old NEI company, a 230 gr. flat point. I don't run it hard .. maybe 1200 fps.

215gr. LSWC over 7.0 gr. of WW231.

Somewhere around 1000 fps, and very, very accurate.

Comfortable enough to shoot all day. I wouldn't feel undergunned with this
load for social work, either.

At the other end of the spectrum:

250gr. Cast Performance WFNGC.

19.8gr. of H110 in a Ruger Blackhawk.

This is a VERY stout load.I would start lower than that.

19.5 gr. might be a little bit more accurate.

JimT, what kind of powder and if you're willing, what's the load?

And out of curiosity, do you know why the SAAMI maximum chamber pressure level was reduced from 43.5K psi (same as .44 mag) to 36K psi? The metallurgy should be modern on all guns in that caliber.

I have no clue, but they did that to the .357 Magnum also, cutting the pressure levels 'way back. I have old handloading manuals with the old load data and it is quite different in some instances to the newer data.

Thanks, Jim! Very nice shooting, by the way! Was that group with a Smith or a Ruger? The twist rates are differnt; Smiths have an 18 3/4" twist and Rugers are 1:20".

Bowen-built custom ..

2-41right.JPG
Started life as a .44 Super Blackhawk. Bowen rebuilt it with an "ovate rib" barrel ... I had Gary Reeder install his "set back" trigger so the trigger stays at the rear of the trigger guard like a single action is supposed to ... Milt Morrison installed the Bisley hammer and gripframe .. Paul Persinger made the Ebony hand-checkered grips. It has Bowen's sights which my old eyes can still see! Lots of little extras here and there. More accurate than I can shoot it.

Elmer Keith wrote that older guys like us are more easily able to focus on the sights of short-barreled handguns. I can't disagree with that.

BTW, a spent .41 magnum case is the perfect volume charger of fffg for a colt or remington .44 percussion revolver.
