Took shrapnel the other week
apparently,,, of sorts. Had a root canal stage 1 started couple weeks back, was unremarkable, came in today to get the canal opened again and re-sealed and the dentist decided not to start but referred me to a specialist as he said I had multiple canal legs instead of one and he didnt want to finish the job.
Saw the specialist same day and on the xray he points out I have a "" separated instrument'' in one of the canals, aka piece of broken tooling. Asked me if I knew it had happened and whether I had pain or discomfort. I said Nope to all three. A bit dissappointed in my dentist. Would he have definetly known he snapped a file in the cavity? I understand its a risk of the procedure but shouldnt he advise me it happened?

You might want to consult a lawyer.
That is inexcusable.

I'd be completely nuts...Yep see a lawyer.. last spring My wife was around family that tested positive for covid. She had a dentist apt less than two days out and She called and cancelled because She didn't want to spread it to them. a few days later We got a bill for $50.00 because she cancelled. I went to the office and gave them a piece of My mind and got fired from the practice . they don't want me around ..... ...... .

Dentist, like anyone else, should have owned up and made it right. Hate to say it, but a lawyer is probably warranted.

Bad things happen, but first of all if one is using a sharp instrument, or any other instrument for that matter, on a person, one needs to be sure that the instrument comes out intact, without the tip being broken off or whatever. Even if that does happen, the other thing is when you make a mistake you need to be forthcoming about it, correct it if you can, or find someone else who can correct it.
Generally, patients understand that, and are reasonably forgiving of treatment failures or honest mistakes. It is when they perceive that you have lied to them, or don't care about them, that they get livid, and I don't blame them.

I have had a lot of dental work. If that happened to me, I would be contacting the State Board of Dentistry.

Re: Took shrapnel the other week
Had he been forthright about it, and sent you to a specialist and agreed to pay for that; I'd be fine with it. If he knew I'd wonder why he didn't mention it, as he had to know the specialist would have caught it. So my gut tells me he didn't know.
But now comes the next question for me, and that's why didn't he know? Any tools used should be checked when he stopped, and missing pieces would raise a red flag and more xrays taken to see if the tip was in your root canal. So to me it's incompetence, and he needs to pay for fixing what he did.

My Dentist takes X-rays before and after any invasive procedure. The Dental Techs can do the X-rays. The new item to capture it which is connected to the computer can tell in less than 1 second if there is anything metal in there.

Thanks fellas, I dont usually get too worked up over mistakes. As marlinman93 says its strange he wouldnt own it if he knew the endodontic specialist would pick up on it. Well I'll go in and see them, see what they have to say.

Re: Took shrapnel the other week
So here is another twist. as I related above I got fired from My previous dentist for complaining about My BS bill they sent. they wanted to crown three of My teeth which never happened. yesterday We went to another Dentist in town who did the whole nine yards with the x-rays and the works. the Dentist is a Woman and flatly said the teeth in question did NOT need crowns and were fine as is. I have a broken tooth She will fix and watch. getting canned from the other place saved Me a lot of money.
Re: Took shrapnel the other week
I had a crown put on a live exposed nerve even though I told him it was. It hit me every day for a year when I finally fired him and moved. Our new dentist is great. The old dentist told my wife she needed 10k worth of work. 15 years later she’s spent maybe 3k..45colt wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 9:03 am So here is another twist. as I related above I got fired from My previous dentist for complaining about My BS bill they sent. they wanted to crown three of My teeth which never happened. yesterday We went to another Dentist in town who did the whole nine yards with the x-rays and the works. the Dentist is a Woman and flatly said the teeth in question did NOT need crowns and were fine as is. Sadly, not everyone is as honest as we hope they would be. My dentist is a woman, and an artist. She has fixed things which others messed up. Funny, but her first name is Edythe. She uses her middle name, Michelle. She is certainly more of a Michelle in the looks department than an Edythe. Top notch skills, and pretty, too. The looks are just a bonus for the customers. We stay because of how good she is at fixing teeth. She used to teach at Baylor Dental School.
