Got a house in Maine!

Post by yooper2 »

My wife and I closed on a place in Surry today after a few months of looking and being outbid on 3 other places. It's a small house with modern systems and a new metal roof. It also has a heated workshop and attached lumber/boat storage area (some folks may call it 2 car garage with carport) and a 30x40' poured concrete slab where I will put up a bow roof shed. The clincher was that while not directly on the water, it came with a strip of land giving us access to a 850 acre pond with good fishing and waterfowl hunting.

While moving our stuff won't be the most fun thing in the world we are very excited to be moving to Maine. The area feels a lot like the Keweenaw Peninsula where I grew up aside from the rich folk houses on the coastline. My wife works remote and I have a great job lined up in the area. Now we just have to find a good gun club and hunting spots!

.
Any place where an 850-acre body of water is a 'pond' has to be nice; where I live anything over about 5 acres is called a 'lake'....

The wife and I almost moved to Maine but the political climate there and the rapidly climbing crime rate (due mostly to the Somali immigrants) disuaded us.

Thanks guys, we feel very lucky both to have gotten a place we like as well as not having to wait any longer. It was very frustrating bidding against people with city money looking for a second home outside whatever miserable overpopulated place they live.

If you think that looks bad to you, try seeing it from the perspective of those who have been here for generations.
It's completely insane. Places that would have gone for 80k a couple years ago, are now 200k. Just a few years ago when the mill closed in Millinocket, you could buy a nice house in town for 12k. Many guys I work with bought houses there just to use for camps for snowmobiling, hunting, or fishing. Then they would rent them out by the week when they weren't using them.
My middle son bought his place 5 years ago. He hasn't put a dime in it, and he sold it for double his money in a week.
Once the Rona hit, outa staters ran here with their money and bought whatever was for sale. Many bought sight unseen online from wherever they were.
The southern end of the state holds the lefties. Farther north is much better. "The County" is like going back in time.

The same situation has been playing out in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While the college towns of Houghton and Marquette have always been a bit more pricey everything else has been dirt cheap in my neck of the woods since the copper mines shut for the last time after WWII. In 2007 my folks sold thier 80 acre farm with a 3 bedroom loghouse and good outbuildings for 75k and did well to get it. It sold 2 years ago for just under 300k. The place is about 35 miles from town and 6 miles from pavement. Housing prices in town have really gone nuts. The thing that blows me away is that there really aren't any jobs to support this in the area.

Yea, I fully understand the frustration caused by out of staters. California has been dealing with it since the federal government gave land to farmers that over farmed their land in the thirties.

Heck we even have a fair number of folks from the northeast that tired of cold weather.

Of course had all these interlopers not moved here I might be able to buy a house for $200 thousand instead of $2 million.

When I "immigrated" to the US in 1952, we first lived in Dallas. Then mom moved us to CA, where I grew up. After retiring, I returned to Texas! Best move ever!

That's what I keep waiting to see here.
I don't know what these people did for a living where they came from, or what it paid, but many are going to be in for a rude awakening here. There just isn't much here. If they didn't research and have something lined up, they are going to be in trouble. I think the ones that came during the Rona to "escape" are going to be in trouble financially.

I don’t know Griff but I wish you had taken back a bunch of Texans and southerners in general with you.

Many came during WWII for jobs and stayed. Many more came when welfare was higher here in the 60’s than it was in their home state.

Folks make noise about liberals in California but they don’t realize most of them came from out of state or are the offspring thereof.

Maybe so... but the educated ones learned their rabid liberalism there... and there they should remain. I've had many friends, try to shake themselves free of the Golden State... Several have said as have others... I stay because of my grandkids... Well... frankly, do your grandkids a huge favor, give their parents a reason to leave that political hellhole and visit AMERICA! Maybe they'll find something they like... I'm so thankful that my parents took my on trips to visit grandma and uncles and aunts... all over the US, I learned ever so much more than sitting in a classroom listening to a lecture! We have an absolutely beautiful country... marred only by the stupidity we as a whole express by the politicians we elect.

Love the Keweenaw. Great dual sport motorcycle riding. Hope you enjoy Maine, never been there, but it is on the short list to go.

How hot and humid does it get in Maine? Can you sleep at night with the windows open? If it's anything like the humid subtropical sauna summers in central PA, it can't be pleasant.

It's generally not too bad. We definitely get some humid days, but I doubt it's anything like PA. Towards the coast will be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Higher elevations and way up north are cooler in summer also.
It was cloudy yesterday until early afternoon. Before the sun came out it was 49 degrees at my house.

I'm down on the southern coast of Maine myself. It's a great place to live! The other day I was striper fishing on the Webahannet inlet sweating my azz off!
Today I'm cold! It does get hot and humid, but not much. Perhaps 6 or 7 days a year. OldWin is completely right on housing prices!
Since covid out of staters moved in a bought up everything! If you like fishing and hunting, it's the place for you!
If you like high-end dinning and nightlife, you're in the wrong place! Unless you consider high end, dinning red hot dogs and lobster rolls!
I like the cooler weather over the heat! I could always put more clothing on if I'm cold. People tend the attack me when I walk around nude in the heat of summer!
It's probably because of my sculpted Irish Scandanavian God like body! But that's a story for another day.
P.S. I landed two short stripers, so I came home with no fresh fish!

Hahaha! Freakin Johnny!

Nobody would even notice you doing that in West Athens. Of course, that God like body would give you away. They'd know you was an outsider.

How are things up north OldWin? Yes, it's tough being a sculpted Adonis!
Perhaps it's my Viking heritage, or my creamy Irish skin.
Although I'm a bit burnt up for fishing over the holiday weekend!
I hope all is well!

All good up here buddy. Busy as all get out.
Got 2 fences to put up still. Did get out and get a few fiddleheads. Working on the trailer/camp project. Matter of fact, I just got in from wire wheeling the frame. Fun!

Hope all is well down south buddy. Stay outta trouble!
Wife and I were down to Boothbay a couple weeks ago. We try and get down there 2 or 3 times during the summer.

I'll do my best to stay out of trouble. Had a few beers with a buddy that I've known since 4th grade.
The wife cooked up some haddock and veggies for us. Laughed our buts off talking about our misspent youth.
My ribs are still killing me from all the laughing! In the end it's the funny moments in life we remember!
