Still Smiling!

Post by High Desert Hunter »

Took the new to me 32-20 Marlin out again today, shot it mostly at 50 yards, with 102gr RCBS cast and 100gr XTPs over different powders, but mostly AA #9. They all had me smiling every time I squeezed the trigger and heard the ding. Other powders used were 2400, Unique, and Bullseye, the Bullseye loads were so quiet, and at 50 yards barely even made a sound when it hit steel. I did hit some volleyball sized rocks at 235 yards with the AA #9 loads and the RCBS cast bullet once I figured out that shooting uphill, I needed no holdover. I will be on the hunt for a bullet mold that drops a 115-120 grain bullet designed with the 32-20 in mind, so much fun I am smiling again thinking about it.

Accurate Molds has a few. Click their name and it'll take you to one with a nice, big lube groove.

Thanks Paul, Tom makes a great mould, I have a couple. Kid, that would be on the light side of where I am looking, I would like something close to the old Lyman 311 118, a 115gr bullet designed for the 32-20, thanks for the input though Amigo, it is appreciated. It was a warm one today, just about 90 degrees, but supposed to be in the 60s on Tuesday with rain, something the Tularosa Basin can rarely get enough of.

Lyman still makes that one, it's called the #311008 now. Takes the #8 TP. Got some cast up and unsized if you'd like me to send you a few, made of L#2 lead so kinda hard.

Been looking at this one, never got the chance at a Ranch Dog mould, but I know a lot of Marlin shooters who swear by them.

Thanks Joe, I wouldn't want you to go to the trouble, I am not hurting for bullets. Even though it's lighter than I want, and the nose isn't the correct dimension for the 32-20, the 100gr RCBS shoots well enough for now. Loaded over Bullseye it makes a quiet fun loading for short range work.

Sir, I think you'd just better bring that Marlin to the Otero County Shooting Range in La Luz and let the staff -- me included -- coon-finger it.
Boy that was a good blow we had yesterday wasn't it?

Bill, it sure was, I was hoping we would get more moisture today. I will try to get out to the range soon.
